A mere ten-minute walk from Arnold Hall, Back in the Day Bakery specializes in everything sweet. From cinnamon buns to cupcakes and pies, the old-fashioned establishment has anything your sweet tooth could crave.
But the bakery also has more substantial grub too. For lunch they offer the Pimento and Pig Sandwich served hot with, you guessed it, melted pimento cheese and apple smoked bacon. They also offer a Happy Day’s Salad for the health conscientious customer and a variety of cold sandwiches too. Refresh with a latte, Americano or a glass bottled soda pop. If you’re a stingy college student like me, you could settle for the complimentary cold tap water offered from the counter jug.
For lunch, I opted for the Build Your Own Biscuit. After all, I fully support a place that serves breakfast all day! This is one of the most popular items on the menu and for good reason.
Guests first choose between fresh buttermilk and everything biscuits at a flat rate of $1.85 each. The biscuits are light and really do melt in your mouth! I chose from the fixings and loaded my biscuit with the $1.75 egg bake, $1.75 Gruyere cheese and the $0.75 spicy pepper jelly. For just over $6, I got a belly full of Southern cooking goodness.
My only recommendation would go in between the rush hours. Word has spread quickly about this quaint bakery that delivers some serious taste — it’s no wonder the owners have their own cookbook –and the lines can wrap into the dining room or even outside. Truthfully, the owners could probably use more staff members to feed all the hungry patrons, but then again, you could always phone in an order for pick up.
Make sure to give this place a try, your taste buds will thank you! Back in the Day is closed Sundays and Mondays and open every other day from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
