College Security Report: April 27-May 12, 2009

April 27

7:50 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that, as she was parking in the public library parking lot, she noticed a homeless man approaching her vehicle. After she walked away from her vehicle, the man continued to walk around in the vicinity of her vehicle. She set off the panic alarm on the vehicle and the man departed the area. She did not want the police notified.

11 a.m.— Security observed a SCAD student with a BB gun in class in Anderson Hall. The operations manager responded to the scene and informed the professor that the student could not have a BB gun on site without prior approval from the college. The professor had the student remove the gun and place it in the trunk of the student’s vehicle.

2:55 p.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at Hamilton Hall involving a U-Haul truck being driven by a SCAD student and a parked vehicle. The owner of the parked vehicle could not be found. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

3 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone attempted to steal his bike while he was in a convenience store at 54th and Montgomery streets. He stated that he observed someone trying to take his unsecured bike and when he attempted to stop him an altercation ensued. The student did not want EMS response. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

3:04 p.m.— Security responded to an off-campus vehicle accident at West Boundary and Jones streets involving an American Coach Line bus and a non-SCAD vehicle. No injuries were reported. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

April 28

12:31 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Oglethorpe House. A SCAD student was complaining of numbness in the hands and a rapid heartbeat. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Candler Hospital.

7:50 a.m.— A SCAD professor reported to security that someone had flipped the chairs and desks in a room in Norris Hall, and left a note reading “Courtesy of your friendly neighborhood Spiderman.” Pictures were taken of the classroom.

8:05 a.m.— Security responded to an off-campus vehicle accident at Barnard and Oglethorpe streets involving a SCAD student and two non-SCAD individuals. No Injuries were reported. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

10:45 a.m.— A SCAD student was stopped by security at the main entrance at Arnold Hall after her access card did not work at the card reader. Security checked for the proper sticker and informed the student that she should have the card checked at York Hall to see why it was not working. The student was not happy and flipped the security officer her middle finger. When asked by the security officer if she knew what she just did, the student stated, “Yes…I just said f*** you.” The operations manager responded to the scene. The student told the operations manager that she was sorry for her behavior and that she was just frustrated.

1:09 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Montgomery Hall. A SCAD student had passed out while in class. EMS responded to the scene, but the student refused EMS services. The residence director was notified.

9:20 p.m.— Security received a call from a SCAD student requesting an on-call counselor. Dispatch called the counselor and gave them the student’s contact information.

April 29

1:30 p.m.— Security was notified that there was a homeless woman sleeping in the bushes at York Hall. Security responded to the area and immediately called for police response. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene, issued a ban form, and escorted the homeless woman off site.

5 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that as she was leaving Eichberg Hall at 4 a.m. to go to her off-campus residence, she was followed by a man in a black SUV. She stated that the vehicle followed her for several blocks. She called the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and the SUV departed when the police arrived. The police issued a report.

7:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that she was being harassed by another SCAD student. She stated that two weeks ago he grabbed her buttocks in the hallway of Hamilton Hall. She also stated that on April 29, she received a Facebook message from him stating that “he wanted to tickle her thighs and that there was nothing she could do about it.” She stated that she felt harassed and unsafe and did not want to be in the same building as him. She did not wish to notify the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police at this time. Security instructed her that a report would be completed and forwarded to the office of the dean of students and that she should notify security or the police if she felt further threatened.

April 30

1:23 a.m.— Security received a call from Sonitrol alarm company concerning a loss of signal from the backup line at Ex Libris. Security responded and patrolled the area. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.

1:50 a.m.— Security stopped an individual from entering Barnard Village because the person did not have a SCAD ID. Security called a resident assistant who met the student at the gate, confirmed that they were a resident and allowed the student to enter.

8:07 a.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm activation at Magnolia House. Savannah Fire Department was already on site upon security’s arrival and had determined that the alarm was caused by someone accidentally burning toast in the building.

10:30 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had shrink-wrapped and left harassing fliers on her vehicle at Barnard Village. She stated that she believed that another student was responsible. She indicated that someone has been repeatedly asking her out and that he was not taking no for an answer and that he had sent some disturbing e-mails in the past. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

4:05 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had hit her vehicle while it was parked in the Adler Hall overflow lot. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

5 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Barnard Village involving an American Coach Line bus driver. Security met EMS at the scene. The bus driver was experiencing chest pains and was transported to the hospital.

6:51 p.m.— A SCAD employee informed security that she had observed a SCAD student, who had been banned from the dorm areas, in the Weston/Dyson complex. The student was asked to leave the dorm area and complied without incident.

May 1

12:52 a.m.— Security noticed a man loitering near the entrance of Montgomery Hall asking the students for cigarettes. Security escorted the individual off property.

1:54 a.m.— Security responded to a call box alarm activation at Anderson Hall. A foot patrol was conducted and no one was found in the area.

3:58 a.m.— Using closed-circuit television, dispatch observed three males entering Pulaski House through the main entrance. Security responded to Pulaski and stopped the students. The students stated that they had all entered the building to use the bathroom and that this was allowed because one of them was a resident assistant.

11:21 p.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm at the Lucas Theatre. Security conducted a patrol of the building and found nothing to be out of order.

May 2

3:18 a.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm at the Lucas Theatre. A patrol of the building was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered.

11:48 a.m.— Security responded to a smoke alarm at a room in Barnard Village. Upon investigation the alarm was determined to be false.

2:51 p.m.— Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police notified security that a gray Chevy Suburban registered to a SCAD individual had been damaged at on Abercorn Street. The police stated that a non-SCAD individual on a scooter had struck the vehicle.  Pictures were taken of the vehicle damage.

May 3

3:09 a.m.— Security observed a two-car collision at Jones and Boundary streets with one vehicle fleeing the scene. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police and EMS responded to the scene and one passenger in the vehicle was determined to be a SCAD student. He sustained lacerations to his right arm and neck, but refused medical transport. The police issued a report.

6:15 p.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident at the Weston/Dyson parking lot. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. No injuries were reported.

May 4

3:45 a.m.— Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police notified security that there were eight vehicles damaged while parked on Turner Street near Ann Street. The police stated that each vehicle had its passenger side windows broken. The police notified security due to the fact that some of the cars had SCAD parking stickers. It was not immediately known whether anything was missing from the vehicles.

12:55 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Pepe Hall. A SCAD student stated that she had passed out while sitting on the stairs. She refused EMS response and returned to class.

4:41 p.m.— Security provided transport for an on-call counselor and an off-campus student to Memorial University Medical Center.

5:01 p.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident involving a SCAD bus and a non-SCAD vehicle at the intersection of Barnard and Anderson streets. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. No injuries were reported. Pictures were taken of the damage to the bus.

May 5

2:54 a.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Arnold Hall. Security patrolled the area, but nobody was found.

11 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen her bike from the bike rack at Oglethorpe House. She stated that she had locked her bike to the rack at 11 p.m. May 4, and that the bike was missing when she returned at 11 a.m. May 5. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

12:01 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Old Arch. Upon investigation it was determined that the call box was activated by children playing in the area.

2 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen his bike from the front rail of Arnold Hall. He stated that he had locked the bike to the front rail of Arnold Hall at 11 a.m. April 24, and that he noticed the bike missing at 3 p.m. April 28. The bike was not registered with SCAD security. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

6:30 p.m.— An American Coach Line bus driver reported to security that a black Ford had tried to run her off the road while she was driving on Drayton Street. The bus driver stated that the vehicle was now parked at Fahm Hall. She said that she did not want to file a police report.

May 6

12 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Hamilton Hall. Security determined the alarm was false, and was caused by a Sonitrol technician working on the site.

1 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he had lost his cell phone somewhere between Gulfstream Center and Montgomery Hall earlier in the day.

2:40 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that the left front end of her vehicle had been damaged while parked outside her room at the Weston lot. She stated that she had parked the vehicle at 6 p.m. May 5 and that she noticed the damage when she returned to her vehicle at 9 a.m. May 6. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

11:30 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector alarm at a room in Barnard Village. Security determined the room was unoccupied and that the alarm was false. The system was silenced and reset.

May 7

8:55 a.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector alarm activation at Magnolia House. Security met with the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and it was determined that the alarm was caused by smoke from a toaster.

10:47 a.m.— Security responded to vehicle accident involving an American Coach Line bus and a white truck that fled the scene of the accident. The bus driver stated that a white truck struck the bus damaging the driver’s side mirror. No injuries were reported. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

3:05 p.m.— At Gulfstream Center, a security officer observed a 2009 black Nissan Versa strike the rear bumper of a silver Honda Civic and leave the scene. Upon further investigation it was discovered that the driver of the Nissan was the daughter of a SCAD employee. The owner of the Honda Civic, stated that she did not want police notified and that she would just exchange information.

5 p.m.— At 5 p.m. May 7, two SCAD employees reported to security that two men had attempted to mug them in front of Pinnacle Gallery at 11:30 p.m. May 6. They stated that they were walking east on Liberty Street when two men came around the corner of Habersham Street. One of the men said, “Give it up,” and opened his shirt to show the butt of a gun tucked in his waistband. They yelled at the two men and they fled the scene running east on Liberty Street.

May 8

6:35 a.m.— Security discovered a SCAD student sleeping on the ground between two parked vehicles at Eichberg Hall. There were several empty beer cans, a glass pipe, her cell phone and her wallet lying on the ground next to her. A resident assistant responded to the site. She stated that she had laid down after arriving at Eichberg at 5:30 a.m. The student was escorted to her dorm at Turner House and the residence director was notified.

9:52 a.m.— Security responded to an elevator entrapment call at Jen Library. Two SCAD employees were entrapped on the freight elevator at the second floor. Atlantic Elevator Services responded to the scene and were able to remove the two employees from the elevator.

May 9

7:19 a.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm at the Lucas Theatre. A patrol of the building was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered.

May 10

11:20 a.m.— Security discovered the exit gate arm at Turner Annex to have been damaged and broken off. Security was instructed to do extra patrols of the area until repairs could be made on Monday.

3:20 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to the security officer at the Weston/Dyson booth that an unknown male (another SCAD student) had just improperly touched her in the Weston lobby. A security supervisor responded to the scene and spoke with the SCAD student who was identified as the student that had touched the complainant. He stated that he had touched her because, “I thought she was pretty and I just wanted to touch her.” At that point he sat down in the lobby and kept repeating, “I’m done, I’m done.” The on-call counselor and residence director were notified of the situation and the counselor determined that the student should be transported to Memorial University Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation.

May 11

8:15 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen her bike from Forsyth Hall. She stated that she had left the bike unsecured at the rack to enter the building. She returned moments later and the bike was missing. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to dispatch and issued a report.

9:48 a.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm at a room in Boundary Village. Upon investigation, the alarm was determined to be false and the system was reset.

2:59 p.m.— Security stopped a SCAD student at the security booth of Turner House. Security had been given instructions that the person was not allowed to be on Turner property. Security confiscated the ID and the student left the premises.

May 12

4:02 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her 1993 Honda Civic was missing from the 4000 area of Boundary Village.  She stated that she had last seen the vehicle at 7 p.m. May 10, and that she noticed it missing at 9 a.m. May 11. Savannah-Metropolitan Police were called to the scene and issued a report.

4:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike was missing from the bike rack at Oglethorpe House.  She stated that she had locked the bike to the rack at 8 p.m. May 8, and that the bike was missing when she returned at 4:30 p.m. May 12.  The bike was not registered with SCAD security.  Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

4:30 p.m. p.m.— At 4:30 p.m. May 12, security responded to a property damage call at Barnard Village.  A SCAD student stated that her roommate had damaged her laptop at 10 p.m. May 8.  The roommate denies damaging the laptop. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene at the victim’s request and issued a report.
