College Security Report Jan. 24-30, 2011

January 24

12:50 a.m. — A student attempted to gain access to Turner House using an ID belonging to another student. Security notified the resident adviser on duty.

7:30 a.m. — A SCAD employee notified security that someone cut the security cords and stole the hard drives from three computers in Anderson Hall. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded to the scene and issued a crime report.

11:15 a.m. — Security responded to an off-campus vehicle accident on Montgomery Street involving two student-driven vehicles. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded to the scene and issued a crime report. There were no injuries reported.

January 25

11 p.m. — Savannah Fire Department notified security that there was a problem with the exterior lights at Trustees Theater. The lights were blown and the wires appeared to be smoking. Maintenance was notified of the situation and responded to the scene.

11:27 p.m. — An SCAD employee reported to security that her bike had been stolen from the bike rack at Oglethorpe House between Jan. 22 and 25. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded to the scene and issued a crime report.

January 26

1:05 p.m. — Security responded to “smoke” alarm at Pulaski House. Security met Savannah Fire Department at the scene. It was determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking. The alarm was silenced and reset.

5:52 p.m. — Security responded to a room in Turner House for a possible drug policy violation observed by the resident advisers while conducting a routine check. Security met the resident director at the scene and observed a glass pipe and rolling papers on a student’s desk. The student was not present. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded and confiscated the paraphernalia with the intent to destroy the items.  Pictures were taken of the items prior to removal.

8 p.m. — Security responded to a “smoke” alarm at Abercorn Terrace. Upon investigation it was determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking. The alarm was silenced and reset.

Unknown — A student reported to security that someone placed a note on her car stating “Smart cars look like small, gay golf carts.  I hope an Escalade smashes yours”. The student stated that she could think of no one who could have placed the note. Patrols were increased in the area for the remainder of the night.

January 27

5:15 p.m. — Security responded to a report of a possible mugging at Arnold Hall. Security met Savannah-Chatham Metro Police at the scene. It was soon determined that the incident was probably not a mugging, but was a group of non-SCAD individuals fooling around. No suspects or victims were identified.

7:30 p.m. — A student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from Arnold Hall. The student stated that she locked the bike in front of the hall at 8 a.m. and it was gone when she returned at 7:30 p.m.

7:20 p.m. — Two individuals attempted to gain access to Montgomery Hall without student identification. Both individuals stated they were SCAD students, but neither had ID. As security began to explain access policy, one of the individuals became confrontational. Both individuals departed when the officer called the operations manager to ask for assistance.

7:30 p.m. — Security responded to vehicle accident involving two student-driven vehicles at 36th and Bull streets. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded to the scene and issued crime report. No injuries were reported.

11:16 p.m. — Security observed a man acting strangely and loitering in front of Morris Hall. The operations manager responded to the scene and asked the male if he needed assistance. The male said “no” and ran away. Security notified Savannah-Chatham Metro Police and gave them a description. Police and SCAD security increased patrols in the area for the remainder of the night.

January 28

7:20 a.m. — Security responded to a “power failure” alarm at LaiWa Hall. A patrol of the building was conducted and no problems were discovered. Maintenance was notified of the alarm.

10:12 a.m. — A student reported that her Iphone 4 was missing. The student stated that the phone might have been taken from her purse while she was at Primary Art Supply on Broughton Street. She also stated that her parents were receiving harassing phone calls since the phone went missing. The student said would follow up with security after she placed a report with the police.

12:40 p.m. — Security responded to a “smoke” alarm at Abercorn Terrace. Security met Savannah Fire Department at the scene. It was determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the room.

1:30 p.m. — A student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from her off-campus apartment on Charlton Street. She claimed to have already informed Savannah-Chatham Metro Police.

3 p.m. — Security responded to a “smoke” alarm at Boundary Village. Upon investigation it was determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the dorm.

7:05 p.m. — Security responded to Turner House for a possible drug policy violation. The resident adviser stated that during a routine check, he smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from one room. Security met the resident director at the scene where a student stated that there was marijuana in the room but that it belonged to his roommate. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded, confiscated a glass pipe, two bags of marijuana from the room and two bags taken off the roommate. The roommate was arrested.

7:25 p.m. — Security discovered the maintenance door in Weston House to be unsecured.  Maintenance was notified and secured the door.

7:42 p.m. — A student called dispatch requesting to speak with an on-call counselor. Dispatch took the students information and called the counselor. The student was then transferred.

January 29

2:09 a.m. — Security observed a vehicle idling at Old Arch for approximately 10 minutes. Upon investigation security discovered the driver of the vehicle slumped over at the wheel. After knocking on the window and getting no response, security notified Savannah-Chatham Metro Police. The police officer was able to get the driver to open the door. The driver, a student, stated that she had been drinking on Broughton Street and had made it to Old Arch before she felt that she couldn’t drive anymore. The resident director was notified and the student was escorted to her dorm by security.

10:10 a.m. — Security responded to Gulfstream Center after being told that one of the light fixtures had been sparking and had making popping noises. An electrician responded to the scene but found no discrepancies. Security dispatched an electrician a second time at 15:05 hours after the fixture was observed sparking by the security officer on duty. This time the fixture had char marks on the outside and the electrician made repairs.

12:30 p.m. — A student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from Boundary Hall. The student stated that she secured the bike to a wooden pole at 10:55 a.m. and that the bike was gone when she returned at 12:15 p.m. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded to the scene and issued a crime report.

January 30

11:06 a.m. — A student reported to security that the side window of his vehicle had been broken sometime after he had parked his car the previous night. A GPS unit and charger, MP3 player with charger and a school book had been taken. The student stated that he cleaned the glass from the car, drove a friend home and then went to bed and reported the incident to Savannah-Chatham Metro Police in the morning.

11:38 p.m. — Security attempted to stop a student from entering Eichberg Hall without an ID. The student refused to stop and became verbally abusive to the security officer. An operations manager responded to the scene and spoke with the student who later apologized for yelling at the security officer. But he continued by saying he had too much work to do and that he felt the security officer should remember him since he came in every day.

12 p.m. — A student reported to security that a hubcap from his car had been stolen while it was parked at Boundary Village sometime after 7:30 p.m. and 11:20. Savannah-Chatham Metro Police responded to the scene and issued a crime report.

10:38 p.m. — Security observed an unknown male going through trash cans and Dumpsters near Old Arch Hall. Security informed the male that he could not be on SCAD property and he departed.
