College Security Report: March 3-9, 2010

March 3

8:45 a.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her vehicle had been damaged while it was parked at Turner Annex. She stated that someone had taken the BMW emblem off of her car. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.

11:24 a.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm activation at Keys Hall. Security met the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and it was determined that the alarm was caused by a faulty pull station. The system could not be reset due to the faulty pull station. A safety assistant was informed of the situation and stated that she would notify Sonitrol alarm company so that they could make repairs.

12:08 p.m.— A SCAD student called dispatch and spoke with an officer regarding his student ID. The student stated that he had left his ID on the bus the previous day and that someone had promised to have his ID dropped off at Arnold Hall, and he was wondering why it wasn’t there. When the officer told him that he would have to contact transportation, the student responded, “Are you f****** stupid?” and hung up. An operations manager responded to Arnold Hall and was able to assist the student in tracking down his ID. The student stated that he was under the impression that transportation and security was one company. He departed the site to pick up his ID at transportation without further incident.

3:30 p.m.— Security responded to a call from the security director asking for assistance at a room in Turner Annex. Security met the director at the scene and stood by as he conducted a search of the room due to a tip that he had received. The room search uncovered a small amount of marijuana and baggies. At 4 p.m., the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police arrived on site. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police took the drugs and paraphernalia and departed the scene.

7:40 p.m.— A SCAD student called dispatch and requested to speak with the on-call counselor. Security took all of the student’s information and passed it along to the counselor, who stated that she would contact the student.

10:17 p.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security of a trouble heat sensor alarm on the first floor of Turner House. Security responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the fire panel did not indicate an alarm of any type and read that all systems were normal. Sonitrol was notified and was asked to place a work order to have the system checked.

March 4

12:33 a.m.— Security responded to a fire trouble alarm activation at Jen Library. The alarm restored itself prior to security’s arrival. A patrol of the building was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered.

12:43 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security that they had received a trouble alarm that immediately restored itself at a room in Barnard Village. Security conducted a patrol of the area and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered.

12:51 a.m.— Security responded to a trouble alarm at a room in Barnard Village. Security conducted a patrol of the area and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered. The alarm was silenced and reset.

3:03 a.m.— Security stopped a SCAD student from attempting to gain entry to Turner House with two non-students. The student stated that her friends had flown in late that night and had been unable to get guest passes. Security contacted the residence director and he arranged for the visitors to stay with another male student for the evening.

1:40 p.m.— A security officer observed a non-SCAD individual looking at inappropriate images on a Jen Library computer. When the man was informed that was against library policy, he became loud and belligerent. The man was banned from the library by the library staff.

7 p.m.— The director of student conduct reported to security that the Dyson Field gate was unsecured. Security responded to the scene but could not find a chain or padlock for the gate. It was later determined at 8:53 p.m. that city workers had been working under the Talmadge Bridge and had locked the gate when they departed.

March 5

5 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Anderson Hall. A SCAD professor stated that when she was leaving room a in Anderson Hall, she slipped and struck a window with her elbow. The professor stated that she did not need EMS response.

March 6

12:35 a.m.— A SCAD parent called dispatch and stated that he was concerned about his son who had told his father that he was upset. The parent stated that he did not want to speak with anyone at the college and that he would attempt to continue contacting his son. The parent promised to call security if he needed any further assistance. At 1 a.m., the parent called back and stated that he had spoken with his son and that everything was fine.

7:17 a.m.— Security discovered graffiti on the side of Dyson House closest to the overpass. Security placed the item on the maintenance work order list for removal.

10:18 a.m.— A SCAD parent called dispatch and stated that he would like to speak with the on-call counselor regarding his son. Security passed on all information to the counselor, who stated that she would contact the parent.

10:30 a.m.— Security responded to an alarm at Turner House. Sonitrol alarm company was notified and stated that they already knew about the alarm and that a work order had already been placed to have the system checked.

7:50 p.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at the Old Arch. Security patrolled the area, but no one was in the vicinity of the call box.

7:57 p.m.— Security responded to a dispute at a room in Turner House. Two SCAD students stated that they had been threatened by their roommate’s father. One of the students stated that the father had come to her room looking for the other student and her boyfriend. The father entered the room and started screaming at the first student to tell him where the second student and her boyfriend were. The father told the first student that he would find them himself and take whatever charges he was given after he “beat them up.” Security immediately notified the residence director and the on-call manager. The director called dispatch at 8:15 p.m. and stated that it was decided that the two students would be staying off campus that night. Security was asked to deny the father entry to the campus if he returned.

11:05 p.m.— Security responded to a dispute at the Weston/Dyson parking lot. A resident assistant (RA) stated that a non-SCAD individual (who is the boyfriend of a SCAD student) had attempted to hit him with his car. The RA stated that he had recognized the man’s vehicle and went to talk to him regarding an incident that occurred last week. The RA was under the impression that the man had been banned from the property and attempted to detain him while he contacted security. It was later determined that the man had not been banned from the property. The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and mediated the dispute between the two individuals. No charges were pressed. The police issued a report.

11:57 p.m.— Security responded to a noise complaint at Dyson House. The residents of a room in Dyson had complained about the noise coming from a nearby room in Dyson. While waiting for the resident assistant to respond, security observed a SCAD student come out of the second room and throw a Crown Royal liquor bottle in the trash. The resident assistant responded to the scene and checked the room, but found no other liquor. The residence director responded to the scene and asked all non-residents of the room to depart. A picture was taken of the Crown Royal bottle.

March 7

6:43 a.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at Jen Library. Security met the Savannah Fire Department at the scene and it was determined that the alarm was false. The system was silenced and reset.

7:50 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security of an alarm on the back door of Gutstein Gallery. Security met the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police at the scene and the back emergency door to the gallery was unsecured. A patrol of the inside of the building was conducted and nothing appeared to be disturbed. The door was the secured. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police issued a report.

8:18 a.m.— A SCAD student stated that he was attempting to enter the Boundary Village 4000 area when he accidentally struck the card swipe unit with the Ryder truck he was driving, knocking over the swipe unit and pole. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report. Maintenance was notified of the damage.

3:45 p.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Club SCAD. A SCAD student stated that she was having trouble breathing. EMS responded to the scene and transported the student to Memorial University Medical Center.

March 8

No activity was reported.

March 9

2:50 p.m.— Security responded to a smoke detector activation at a room in Barnard Village. The Savannah Fire Department responded to the scene and upon investigation it was determined that the alarm was caused by students cooking in the dorm. The alarm was silenced and reset.

4:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that he had lost his bookbag containing two textbooks. The student stated that he believes that he may have left the bookbag in either Montgomery Hall or Arnold Hall between March 4 and March 6.

5:39 p.m.— A SCAD student contacted security to ask if there was anything else she could do to complain about her roommate’s father, regarding an incident that occurred March 6. The student stated that she had already contacted two residence directors, but she wanted to take the incident further. Security contacted a residence director, who instructed the student to contact someone at Student Services. The student was given an e-mail address and office phone number to contact.
