District receives multiple honors

The District student newspaper staff has recently won a number of awards in various contests.

On Feb. 7, District took home seven awards from the 2008 Georgia College Press Association (GCPA) conference, held in Athens, in the annual Better Newspaper Contest for the four-year college division.

• Former editor-in-chief Brian Smith won first place for Best Column.
• Smith also won second place for Best Feature Story.
• Former photo editor James Biscardi won second place for Best Photograph—News.
• The District staff won second place for General Photography.
• Staff writers Danielle Koch and Nicolette Mallow won second place for Best News Article—Objective.
• The District staff won third place for Best Campus Community Service—Features.
• The District staff won third place for General Advertising.

On Feb. 27, District took home four awards from the 58th Annual Southern Regional Press Institute, held at Savannah State University.

• Staff photographer Sara Keith won first place for Photography.
• Former SCAD Radio news director Benjamin Frisch won second place for Photography.
• Former editor-in-chief Brian Smith won second place for Editorial/Column.
• The District staff won third place for Outstanding University Newspaper.

On April 6, District won six awards in the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2008 Region 3 Mark of Excellence Awards contest.

• Former editor-in-chief Brian Smith won first place for General Column Writing.
• Columnist and staff writer Tandy Versyp won first place for Online Opinion and Commentary.
• Brian Smith won second place for Online Opinion and Commentary.
• Current editor-in-chief Travis Walters won third place for Online Opinion and Commentary.
• Former photo editor James Biscardi won second place for General News Photography.
• The District staff won third place for Editorial Writing.

On April 21, District won three awards from the Missouri Student Society of News Design’s College News Design Contest.

• The District staff won first place for Best Mini-Site/Special Section of Web Site for their Savannah Film Festival 2008 coverage.
• Former art directors Gretchen Schwartz and Brad Tober won second place for Overall Design of a Newspaper.
• Former art director Matthew Cole won honorable mention for Features Page Design.
