Get to Know … Bernardo Marentes

By Victoria Phetmisy

Name: Bernardo Marentes
Major: Film and television
Class: Fourth-year

Bernardo Marentes is a storyteller. Using film as his medium, he likes to tell fictional narratives that focus on characters and, especially, love. And not just the uplifting parts of love, but also the lack thereof. With his films he tries to show the truth in every situation.

Marentes grew up in Colombia with his two missionary parents, then moved to Ecuador and, for the last 10 years, has been a resident of Honduras. His multi-cultural background gives him the passion to bring his relationships into his films. His friends make up the crew of his pseudo-production company — Bermar Pictures — but most of them are not film majors.

He draws inspiration from Truffaut and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, taking away from them a thirst to portray the fantastical truth. With his most recent piece, Marentes is trying to depict visual poetry; which he says has made this piece his most experimental.

As of right now, it is only a work in progress, but his other shorts can be viewed at www.vimeo.com/bamarentes or www.youtube.com/bermarpictures. As he moves into his fourth year at SCAD, he will continue to use his films to bring out the truth in everyday situations. — Victoria Phetmisy
