Get to Know: Megafaun

By Myrriah Gossett

With the Record and Zine fair drawing to a close, you may be asking yourself, “Just who is Megafaun? The North Carolina based band will be taking the stage at the Oglethorpe house ballroom Sat. Oct. 24 at 8 p.m.
Megafaun’s newest album “Gather, Form, and Fly” was released in July. The new tracks are quite different
from their last record, “Bury the Square” which was the artists’ first time truly writing lyrics.

“We spent a lot of time on lyrics. That is a new challenge for us, the three of us had never really written songs until we started Megafaun,” explained band member Brad Cook.

The band draws influences from not only their surroundings in North Carolina but also from bands such as The Band, The Grateful Dead and David Tudor.

“Being inspired living in North Carolina has almost everything to do with our music scene. I have, probably to a fault, a ton of pride in the bands working out of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. It seems like the better shows I have seen in the last year have been local bands, some I know personally and others I don’t. It is a very rich and fertile time to be a band in this area,” Cook said.

While the band draws influences from the local area, the band has worked with international artists including minimalist composer Arnold Dreyblatt who works with what has been called the mathematical language of music.

“We had to learn an entirely new tuning system that centers around some pretty heady math. It really forced all three of us to approach our instruments differently,” Cook said about their experience working with Dreyblatt.

The band will be making their debut performance in Savannah in the Oglethorpe House Ballroom. The band’s record label was actually started by a group who went to school in Savannah.

“We have heard so much about the city from several of our friends, including our record label, Hometapes, who attended college in Savannah,” said Cook.

The band will be hitting the road in Europe shortly after the show in Savannah, hitting up stops in Paris, the United Kingdom, Holland, Germany, Belgium and Ireland.
