Grocery Stores

There are multiple places around town to go grocery shopping; the only real downfall is not many are downtown. There are, however, quite a few places close to the dorms and downtown where you can still get necessary items.

The 24-hour Parkers Market on Drayton St. is always a good stop for a late-night snack run, and a savior during finals week. If you’re more on the healthier side, and gas station-gourmet isn’t for you, there are two other great places to check out.

The Polk Produce and Floral Market is on Liberty St. between Habersham and E. Broad Streets. There’s a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and the staff will usually cut a pretty good deal for students. There’s also Brighter Day, a health food store located on the far side of Forsyth Park on Park St. They have almost everything a normal grocery store does, but it’s mostly organic and comes with a higher price. The deli inside the store has some worthy prices on sandwiches and has many vegan and vegetarian options.

The next-closest thing for most students is the Kroger, located on Gwinnett St. between Lincoln and Habersham Streets. It’s open until midnight and offers very low prices. They offer “manager’s special” sales that really help a college student’s budget, but watch out for expiration dates. Kroger is the closest major grocery store to downtown and on the Lincoln St. bike path.

There are other grocery stores in Savannah, but they’re out of easy walking/cycling distance – you’ll need to catch the city bus, or drive. There is a Publix supermarket located on Abercorn St. a few blocks past DeRenne Ave. There’s also a Fresh Market gourmet supermarket located at the plaza across the street from Publix. The Publix is open until about 10 p.m. on most nights and the Fresh Market is open until 9 p.m. during the week.
