Fourth-year fashion major Kathleen Anne Albo, from Springfield, Va., has four pieces in the SCAD Fashion Show.

“My inspiration for the fashion show was vintage nurses,” she said. She incorporates ’60s A-line silhouettes.

When she graduates, she wants to embark on the merchandising component of fashion. But she is most inspired by designers Carolina Herrera and Ralph Lauren.

“They create the most simple yet ravishing garments and play around with different textures to create something new and beautiful,” Albo said.

Albo’s designs are aimed at a variety of styles.

“I always used to think my designs were too simple to make it anywhere, and when I got four of my pieces into the show, I was thrilled.”

Albo has appreciated SCAD’s effort to expose students to the business of fashion with lectures from designers.

“This school brings in so many industry-oriented people that know how to help and guide you through your experience at SCAD.”

Albo is also looking forward to sharing her designs with the public and experiencing them on the runway.

“I have been working on these six pieces for five months now. We start with muslins at the beginning of winter quarter, and then we perfect them into our final pieces during spring quarter.”

Albo’s biggest challenge preparing for the show was time management.

“You never really realize how long it actually takes to create a garment,” she said.

Albo is also working on a skirt to wear at the show.

“The most valuable thing that I have gained during this experience is self-confidence. I finally believed in myself and my creations, and it helped me realize that you can be successful when you put your mind to it,” she said.

The SCAD Fashion Show takes place on Saturday May 16 at 4 and 8 p.m. SCAD will broadcast the 8 p.m. show on SCAD.tv.
