Gas leak evacuates The Hive

Fire alarms at The Hive residence halls went off at 3:30 p.m. yesterday, the shrill bell sounds echoing out despite the absence of any smoke or flames. What caused the alert this time was instead a gas leak outside the laundry room at the D at the Hive. Students were evacuated and initially told to stay near W at the Hive, the sister dorm next door, but soon enough resident assistants directed everyone to move outside of The Hive complex completely.

Mark Keller, Savannah Fire & Emergency Services’ public information officer, said units responded to 231 W. Boundary St. at 3:46 p.m.

“Firefighters secured the gas and the leak was stopped,” Keller said in an email. “Firefighters contacted Atlanta Gas Light and checked interior of structures for elevated gas concentrations. None were found. Firefighters remained on scene until gas company personnel arrived.”

Once these personnel did arrive, firefighters turned the scene over to them and to SCAD security officials. Savannah Fire units were back in service at 4:15 p.m.
