Savannah weather is a force to be reckoned with, both literally–on days when the wind smacks your portfolio into the faces of everyone you pass–and figuratively, when its violent extremes make getting dressed for the weather a challenging task indeed.

The battle between warm and cold weather is particularly vibrant this time of year, when the mornings still carry the lingering chill of winter, but the afternoons scorch and swelter with humidity. According to weatherspark.com, the average high temperature during April in Savannah reaches the high 70’s, even though the average low falls in the high 40’s.

For students, this variation in temperature can make it hard to dress for a busy day that starts early and ends late, with no time for a costume change in between.  “It’s often hard to know if you need to put on pants and a sweatshirt or shorts and a T-shirt, because you never know how the weather’s going to change–and it changes very dramatically,” said first-year student Danielle Boykin.

Below are some ideas for “transitional dressing”–outfits with layers that will keep you comfortable all day long.

1. Blazer + Sundress + Scarf

In the heat of the day, uncoil the scarf and take off the jacket for an easy warm-weather fix.

2. Rolled Khakis + Hawaiin shirt + Sandals

“In a city like Savannah where the weather is so unpredictable, it’s always best to layer up with light garments to be prepared for anything,” said model Ryan James.

3. Maxi Skirt + Jean Jacket + Sunglasses

“Anyone can wear a maxi skirt,” said stylist Talia Blyer. “They are great for looking put together but are light and comfortable at the same time.” She adds, “You can pair boots and sundresses when its that confusing cold plus bright sunlight weather.”

Shorts and a scarf may seem contradictory, but they work well when tied together with a clean pair of oxfords.

5. Vest + Jeans + Lightweight shoes

Layering with a vest adds weight for extra warmth without the stifling effect of a jacket.
