News brief for March 31: Lovett names first African-American Police Chief in Savannah

Local

After a seven-month search, Mayor Otis Johnson picked Willie Lovett, a 37-year veteran of the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police, as the new chief.  The Police Policy Committee decided this morning to offer the job to Lovett, who plans to accept.

Police responded to a shooting at 36th> and Montgomery streets just before 9:30 a.m. this morning.  They found Kenneth Mobley, 27, suffering from a gunshot wound.  EMS took Mobley to Memorial University Health Center where doctors pronounced him dead. The shooting is under investigation, but Savannah-Chatham Metro Police believe the suspect is a black male who fled the scene on foot.

Critics of President Barack Obama’s signing the Student Aid and Financial Relief Act (SAFRA) on Tuesday, March 30, suggested that the law doesn’t curb rising tuition costs and fees, virtually canceling out any increase in Pell Grants.   Secretary of Education Arne Duncan countered that students and parents will begin to “vote with their feet,” which will spur more open competition in the higher education system.
