Parts of the Talmadge Bridge will close tomorrow, March 9. In a “Bridging Ceremony” to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts, about 3000 Girl Scouts, members and family will cross the bridge on foot.
Police will close the Oglethorpe Avenue ramp leading to the bridge, along with the outside northbound lane of the bridge from 7-11 a.m. Northbound traffic is restricted to a 35 mph during the Bridging Ceremony.
Traffic bound for Hutcheson Island and South Carolina from 7-11 a.m. will be rerouted to DeRenne Avenue/Interstate 516 to access the bridge from Interstate 16.
The procession will continue, on foot, across the bridge to the corner of Oglethorpe Avenue and West Boundary Street. Buses will take participants from there to Forsyth Park, where they will join an estimated 2,000 more celebrants.
The Girl Scouts of the USA celebrates the anniversary of March 19, 1912, when Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low first brought 18 girls together in Savannah and founded the organization.
A Bridging Ceremony takes place at the beginning or end of the Girl Scout year. Girls and visitors observe and celebrate the move from one level of Girl Scouting to another.
