Senior BFA painting students will exhibit their final pieces in a group exhibition, “Gesso and Steel,” at the Sulfur Studios Gallery from March 5 – 7.

Fourth-year painting majors Jordan Acosta from Boerne, Texas, Chalice Bartsch-Bailley from Ocoee, Florida, Anthony Gelfand from New York City, Chelsie Liberati from Columbus, Indiana, and J. Carlos Valdez from Edmonds, Washington, are the artists responsible for the show. Each student has independently explored the ideas of portraiture, abstraction and installation through their various works and how these broad ideas can be narrowed and individualized.

Acosta’s work experiments with multiple printmaking techniques to create abstract compositions that test the boundaries of what constitutes a painting. Bartsch-Bailley manipulates layers of paints poured onto raw canvas and explores how those materials react with hot and cold water.

Gelfand chose installation as his expression to investigate the self in contemporary subject matter. Liberati’s pieces focus on how childhood memories can be resurfaced and portrayed in traditional painting methods. Valdez also addresses the idea of self and identity through oil painting techniques.

The senior BFA painting students invite both the SCAD and Savannah community to come and experience the exhibition.

The opening reception for the exhibition will be held Friday, March 6 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Food and beverages will be available.

There will also be an artist’s talk at the Sulfur Studios Gallery on Saturday, March 7 at 11 a.m. for the students to discuss their work.
