SCAD player honored; lacrosse ranked in publications

The Savannah College of Art and Design men’s lacrosse team is ranked nationally in two different publications and sophomore Rashad Parker was named The Sun Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 18.

“I am very excited about this year’s team and expect great things,” said lacrosse head coach Michael Cummings. “We have a challenging schedule ahead of us, but the Bees will rise to the occasion.”

The Bees, who return 14 players and six starters off last year’s 8-5 squad that advanced to the semifinals of the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division II Tournament, are ranked No. 6 in a preseason ranking by Lacrosse Magazine. SCAD is also ranked 14th in the MCLA The Lax Mag Division II Top 23 poll. In that same poll, SCAD was also picked to finish second in the conference.

Parker, a 6-foot-8 forward/center from Macon had four points, two rebounds, a block and a steal off the bench in the Bees’ 58-54 loss to Webber International University on Jan. 14. Parker scored a career-high 29 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the field to lead SCAD to a 90-80 overtime upset of No. 4 Northwood University three days later. He also had 10 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal, and was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. Parker scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half and overtime as the Bees overcame a 14-point deficit with 14 minutes remaining.

SCAD Lacrosse begins their season Feb. 6 with a 7 p.m. match against Georgia Tech at the SCAD Athletics Center in Hardeeville, S.C.

SCAD Basketball will play St. Thomas University at 4 p.m. Jan. 24 in Miami.
