Senior Fashion Show: expectations and reactions

The SCAD 2014 Senior Fashion Show took place at 4 p.m. at the SCAD Museum of Art. Students, faculty and members of the community came out to support the designers and models.

Following the show, everyone gathered in the courtyard outside the museum to take photos and socialize.

Chrisanne Stone, mother of fourth-year fibers major Taylor Stone from Charlotte, North Carolina, said, “I thought it was fabulous and I’m very impressed with the students here. It’s great to see the school and the talent the students have.”

“I thought the show was great. It’s really inspiring to see all my classmates doing really successfully. They could have been on a runway in Paris,” said Taylor.

Chrisanne and Taylor favored different collections, but were both highly impressed with all of the creations.

“I loved the white jacket with the pink plastic cut outs so that you could see the color of the dress come through. I really loved that,” said Chrisanne.

“I really liked the graffiti line with the model on the cover. I thought her stuff was really cool and inspiring with all the rectangles and the gold. That was really cool, too,” said Taylor.

More than 30 SCAD students volunteered to help with ticketing, guiding attendees to their seats and assisting models.

“This is my first time seeing the fashion show, so it was really awesome to see and experience the different collections,” said third-year visual communications major Alan Lamb from Hayesville, North Carolina. “I actually knew a lot of the models and the designers who are part of the show so it’s cool to see the collections on the actual runway. It was a lot of good work and a lot of interesting concepts.”

“I thought it was surprising,” said second-year industrial design major Mary Juengling from Montclair, New Jersey. “I didn’t know we had that much talent here. There were some really interesting pieces. They were really nicely tailored. There was this one white rubber dress—the model’s butt looked so good in it. It looks like it fits like a glove and it looks like it was inspired by a glove. It was one of my favorites.”

“They had a lot of nice movement, too,” said second-year animation major Emily Sidler from Oakland, California. “Each of the pieces had a nice flow to them. They all had their theme and they worked really well together. There were a bunch of black ones that were made with a certain material—I don’t know specifically what it looked like. The bottom kind of flowed like waves almost and I really enjoyed those.”

The line formed outside the entrance of the 8 p.m. presentation of the senior fashion show nearly an hour prior to opening.

“Our daughter Taylor is a fashion design major at SCAD and we came to see everybody’s hard work,” said proud parents Judy and Ron Krankowski.”We are excited to see everything. Taylor modeled for the fashion show in the past and now she is a senior and she is on the other side, so it’s very exciting.”

A swarm of individuals lingered around the museum sharing reactions to the designs.

“I thought it was awesome, especially not having seen anyone’s collection before. But I thought it was too short and I was kind of disappointed. It was over before it even started,” said Jewelry major Vanessa Pennell from Taylorsville, North Carolina.
“Yeah, everybody’s stuff was really good. They used a lot of interesting materials.”
