Sketch club draws a crowd

In May, the Sketch Club held a “Model Fiesta” for its members and anyone who wanted to attend. The event lasted three hours and let students draw from five pairs of themed costumed models who posed in 20-minute scenes. At the end of the event a contest was held to determine the best sketches. To be judged, work had to be created on individual, non-sketchbook paper.

There were six categories in the contest, of which “Best Portraiture,” a Fine Arts or Illustrative category and “Most Outstanding Caricature” were two. Winners were displayed in Montgomery Hall. Small cash prizes and gift cards to Ex Libris were given out to the winners, along with “fun toys like space guns and Winkie stickers,” said Beth Baronian, the faculty adviser for the club.

Sketch Club meets in Montgomery Hall during regular Fall through Spring session and Anderson Hall Room 203 during the Summer on Fridays from 1-4 p.m. They also keep in touch through their Facebook page. “The Sketch Club has 105 members online at Facebook. Of those, 15-20 will regularly attend meetings. During summer, the attendance is a little bit smaller, but not much,” said Baronian. Damon Westenhofer founded the club, and the current President is Calvin Mudge.

The online component of the sketch club allows its members to share their sketches with one another when they are apart, such as during the summer months, or during the school year when busy schedules may keep them from attending actual meetings.

“All students from any field of study are encouraged to join the club,” says Baronian.
