Spotting fake IDs becomes more important with new city ordinances

Servers, bartenders, and bouncers can expect to be taking classes in the near future on how to correctly read ID cards, and how to also tell if they are fakes. With tentative Savannah bar card program, restaurant workers will be learning about the newest technology, along with other skills to prevent underage drinking.

The trend of fake ID use seems to be on the rise, the University of Georgia Red and Black reported an incident of 13 different students involved in one string of making and distributing fake IDs.

While the UGA students may have been caught, there are plenty of other arenas that underage students can obtain fake IDs. From the Internet to students who may just have quality computer printers and programs, fakes are getting harder to identify.

Some websites and classes offer tips for how to spot a fake ID, and what you can look for not only on the card but on the person as well.

From nervousness when presenting the ID, to how a person’s facial features compare to the picture there a few steps bar workers can take in order to make sure they stay out of trouble.

“We are trying make the employees more accountable rather then the restaurant owners and managers,” said public information officer Bret Bell for the city of Savannah.

The new program is based on similar ordinances from surrounding cities in the Coastal area of Georgia, along with other major metropolises.

The ordnance is still under review and will be brought under vote hopefully within the next year according to Savannah’s Alderman Van Johnson.
