A handful of SCAD students were invited to a press brunch with visiting journalists for the 2014 Savannah Film Festival. The brunch was held earlier today at the Pacci Italian Kitchen + Bar in the Brice Hotel. Six journalists, representing organizations such as Filmmaker Magazine and Huffington Post, were invited to hear these students’ perspectives of the film festival.

Laura Minto, a fourth-year film and television major from Burnt-Hills Ballston Lake, New York, spoke of her hopes for the film festival.

“I would love to be able to have a one-on-one with some of the editors here and really establish a connection with them,” she said. “And ideally that could lead to mentorship, partnership, jobs — further on even references.”

District spoke with Minto and Miles Carby, a fourth-year film and television major from Atlanta, Georgia, before the panel.

“I don’t get very many opportunities to talk with directors about their films and the film festival provides a few opportunities for that … There are important, substantial films in the industry before most of the people even get to see them,” Carby said.

Of the six journalists, only Brad Schreiber of the Huffington Post came, but engaged in a casual roundtable with the students and faculty. Schreiber has experience as a playwright, screenwriter and author and spoke of his experiences in the industry.

“He gave me that re-inspiration to not be afraid to pursue through my vision. I didn’t have to become the cookie-cutter filmmaker in order to be successful,” Minto said. “I can do my passion projects. I can still be successful and balance paying the rent and doing what I want to do. It was very revitalizing.”

Another brunch was scheduled for 6 p.m. the same day at the Marshall House.
