“Women Behind the Scenes” pulls open the velvet curtain of filmmaking

“Women Behind the Scenes” was a great look into the future of filmmaking — a future that allows women to have more of a voice than they have ever had before in the industry.

Seven powerful women — Miranda Seagull, Sharron Medial, Bonnie Timbernmen, Stephanie Meredith, Kate Connor, Kayla York and Julia Pinra — gathered at the Gutstein Gallery to talk about their experiences in the male-dominated field of filmmaking.

People of all ages and genders attended the panel to hear these women share their experiences and answer a number of questions. With every part of filmmaking being represented at this panel, everything was covered in the conversation.

One of the very first topics discussed during the Q&A section of the panel were the gender-related misconceptions that come with analyzing certain aspects of film.

Including sex scenes.

The women shared many words of wisdom, hoping to educate both those interested in pursuing film, and those who simply seek more inside information from those individuals who know it best.

Sentiments of gender equality and the erasure of gender as a modifier was a hot-button topic.

“I am not a female producer, I am a producer,” said Sharron Medial of the Tribeca Film Festival. “I am not a female filmmaker, I am a filmmaker.”
