The sparkling glass doors of the Gutstein Gallery officially opened on Monday, April 13, for SCAD’s annual “Silver & Ink” photography exhibition. The Gutstein is snuggled into the far corner of SCAD’s Jen Library on East Broughton Street, where the occasional passerby stops to peer through the windows where a selection of photos hang, tempting them to come inside.

“Silver & Ink” is a free event open to the public, encompassing a photo gallery exhibition, artist lectures and business workshops presented by the SCAD photography department. It is now entering its eighth year as “the university’s premier juried photography exhibition and publication” showcasing “the best” in student work, according to SCAD’s website.

According to Christopher Constas, sales manager and exhibitions at the Gutstein for SCAD, over 800 pieces of work were submitted to this year’s show. From those pieces, the photo faculty jury selected 107 to show at this year’s event. Constas and Aaron Garvey, SCAD exhibitions assistant curator, chose 15 of those photographs as the Curators’ Showcase Selections.

“The idea behind [those selections] is that those pieces get blown up a little bit bigger than they normally are printed and SCAD frames them,” said Constas.

The student works are all marked for sale, with prices ranging from $1,695 to $195. Most of the works fall within the $200 to $400 price range.

The gallery is now open, showing simultaneously with SCADStyle. However, the opening reception for the event will be held on Saturday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m., a day that coincides with SCAD’s parents weekend as well as the Sidewalk Arts Festival held in Forsyth Park.

The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday 12-5 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays. For more information on the “Silver & Ink” events, check out the SCAD photo blog.

“It should be packed,” said Constas. “It should be very big and very fun.”
