2016’s Savannah Film Festival brought plenty of exclusive screenings and big stars to Savannah and now, as those films transition from awards season to the small screen, we’re checking back in to see how we can revisit some of the best from the comfort of our couches.
“Manchester by the Sea”
“Manchester by the Sea” marked the first film released by a streaming service – Amazon Studios, in this case – to participate in the Academy Awards. The film took home two Oscars, including Best Actor for Casey Affleck. “La La Land”
The colorful musical danced its way through awards season, earning a total of fourteen Academy Award nominations to become one of the most nominated films in Oscar history. Though it didn’t win Best Picture, as we were lead to believe for a few very awkward minutes, the film did receive five awards, including Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director for Damien Chazelle. Check out our interview with the talented Chazelle here and keep your eyes out for his next work, because it’s sure to be another hit. “La La Land” is already available to stream on Amazon Video and iTunes and will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on April 25.
“Moonlight”
“Moonlight” was the actual recipient of the Academy Award for Best Picture, along with Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Before he was an Academy Award winner, Mahershala Ali received the Discovery Award at the Savannah Film Festival and graced our red carpet with his “Moonlight” costar Ashton Sanders. “Loving”
“Loving” tells the dramatic story of Alfred and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple fighting for their rights in 1960s Virginia. The film takes a very honest approach to this true story, particularly through the subdued acting of Ruth Negga, whose performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Leading Actress. “Loving” is now available to stream on Amazon Video and iTunes, as well as to rent or buy on DVD and Blu-Ray. “Arrival”
This mind-bending science-fiction film is out on Amazon Video, iTunes and DVD and Blu-Ray, which is great, because now you can finally watch it over and over to catch all of the plot’s nuances. “Lion”
“Lion” was another strong award season front runner, ending up with six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. The film is a journey, both for the characters and the viewer, one that anyone can now experience, since the film was released on DVD and Blu-Ray earlier this month.
