Men’s Baseball
SCAD defeated Warner University 14-6 in a first-round game of the 2010 The Sun Conference Baseball Tournament Sunday, May 9 at the City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, Fla.
Fourth-year Mark Stewart Jr., a film and television major from Royal Palm Beach, Fla., and first-year Kelvin Goodson, an architecture major from Hagan, Ga., led the first inning with back-to-back home runs.
The Bees added two more runs in the inning on a throwing error. Third-year Mike Hines, a broadcast major from Lithonia, Ga., contributed a two-run double to left-center in the second to make the score 6-0.
Warner got three runs back in the third, but SCAD wasted little time as they scored four times in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a commanding 13-3 lead and the win.
The following day, St. Thomas (Fla.) University rallied for three two-out runs in the top of the ninth inning to get past SCAD 4-3 in a second-round game of the 2010 The Sun Conference Baseball Tournament at the City of Palms Park.
With the Bees holding a 3-1 lead entering the ninth, SCAD reliever Brice Schlosser, a third-year interactive design and game development major from Ocala, Fla., got the first two batters out before the Bobcats put together four two-out hits and the win.
On May 11, the fourth-seed Bees faced sixth-seed Florida Memorial University. SCAD pitcher Ty Donaldson, a fourth-year industrial design major from Helena, Ala. pitched a six-hit shutout as SCAD eliminated Florida Memorial University from the 2010 The Sun Conference Baseball Tournament.
Later that night the Bees were eliminated from the tournament in a 3-0 loss by No. 1 seed Embry-Riddle (Fla.) University.
Women’s Softball
On May 8, SCAD advanced to the title game of The Sun Conference Softball Tournament for a second consecutive year as the Bees recorded two wins on the first day at the Diamond Plex in Winterhaven, Fla.
The lady Bees shut out Webber International University in the first round. SCAD followed by holding off No. 4 seed St. Thomas (Fla.) University 3-2 in the winner’s bracket final.
SCAD registered 11 hits against the Warriors as the lady Bees scored single runs in each of the first three innings. Third-year Courtney Mienkina, an illustration major from Surrey, British Columbia, drove in a run with a single in the first before the lady Bees scored an unearned run in the second.
Mienkina had a hand in the third run as she doubled before scoring on second-year Jessaca Spears’ RBI single in the third.
The lady Bees closed out the scoring in the fifth as fourth-year Dominica Jordan, a film and television major from Mission Viejo, Calif., drove in two runs with a single.
Fourth-year Kristen Curette, an advertising design major from Baytown, Texas, allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings.
In game two, SCAD got off to a quick start against St. Thomas as they took a 3-0 lead after two innings. Mienkina had a RBI sacrifice bunt and second-year Jaime Voelkel, na industrial design major from Madison, Ala., added a RBI single in the first.
The Bobcats rallied in the late innings. St. Thomas had a chance to tie the game in their final at bat, but Carissa Albizu was erased at home plate as part of a double play to end the game as she was trying to score on a fly out.
First-year Sam White, a native of Tucson, Ariz., earned the win for the Bees while Curette notched her fourth save of 2010 by getting the final two outs.
The following day the lady Bees defeated St. Thomas (Fla.) University 7-1 in the championship game of the 2010 The Sun Conference Softball Tournament.
Voelkel and Dominica Jordan combined to drive in five runs and Curette struck out nine as SCAD won their second consecutive tournament title.
SCAD broke open the game with five runs in the fourth inning. Fourth-year Carleigh Shannon, an architecture major from Jacksonville, Fla., and Curette started the uprising with infield singles as Mienkina walked to load the bases.
Shannon and Curette each came around to score on Voelkel’s double to give the Bees a 2-0 lead.
SCAD made it 4-0 when Mienkina and Voelkel scored on Jordan’s two-out double. The Bees closed out the scoring as first-year Krista Ross, a native of Torrance, Calif., contributed a RBI single.
St. Thomas got a run back in the fifth but SCAD would score two more runs in their half of the inning. Voelkel drove in a run with her second double of the game and the Bees scored the other on a bad throw.
Curette improved to 10-2 as she allowed just three hits in the complete game effort.
