En garde: slice it up with SCAD’s Fencing Club

A total of 112 clubs and organizations exist today within the SCAD student body, yet it seems as though only a handful are actually known to the students. One of the more obscure groups is SCAD’s Fencing Club.

“Our meetings generally consist of us members jumping right into the fencing,” said Phil Nix, a fourth-year photography major. “We follow a round-robin rotation of fencers so that each member has fenced with every other before repeating any match ups.”

Aside from fencing bouts, the members also take lessons with their coach, Greg Reyes.

“This combination and integration of active fencing and lessons has proven to keep us all engaged while also allowing us to improve our skills throughout the quarter,” said Nix.

New members take lessons and spend the remaining time watching the more experienced fencers to learn more from them.

The Fencing Club meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 7-8 p.m. at the Savannah Jewish Educational Alliance building on Abercorn Street.
