On Sunday, Oct. 25, Steve Roggenbuck, Postcrunk, Alexis Orgera and Rainé Rainé presented their poetry at the Appreciation Society on 106 E. 40th St.
The event started at 7 p.m., where Orgera started reading her poems, followed by Rainé and Postcrunk. The reading ended at 9 p.m. with Roggenbuck.
Emma and Molly Hatch are the owners of the Appreciation Society, a retail space for vintage clothing, zines and artist’s books.
“Our focus is selling artists’ works and independent magazines, trying to focus on locally made things. We are both from Georgia but I lived in New York before,” said Molly.“We have always talked about opening a store, and it felt like Savannah was a good place to go for it.”
Most of the poems discussed social media, technology, politics and nostalgia. Despite the more serious themes, there were also jokes and laughs. Every artist had their own theme for the occasion.
“One of the readers, Postcrunk, is friends with Roggenbuck, who was currently doing a tour, reached him out to do a reading in Savannah,” said Molly, explaining how the poetry reading came about. “Postcrunk then contacted me to host the event, and I agreed.”
Both she and Emma plan to make events such as this, a regular thing.
Roggenbuck is an internet poet blogger, mostly known for his YouTube videos. His writings, greatly influenced by internet media, make references to pop culture including Zac Efron and Justin Bieber. Despite focusing on pop culture, he still evoked emotion even with the silly tone.
