Students exhibit work at 2016 Illustration Expo
The 2016 Illustration Exposition took place on the second floor of Poetter Hall and brought in numerous amounts of people from not only SCAD, but from the outer parts of Savannah as well. It meant fighting a small crowd of people coming in from the street to go to the exposition—a small fight that given the display of student work, was worth it.
The exposition was full of tables that housed small and large illustrations of all kinds: stickers, buttons, and little business cards with drawings of kittens in hoodies (courtesy of Beatriz Mayumi). We asked a few illustrators quick questions about their artwork, such as Derik Hobbs, a fourth-year illustration major from Cookeville, Tennessee.
He described his art style as that of a “poetic scientist,” his artwork drawing a surrealist aspect from a scientific illustration background. 
“The expo has been a great experience the past two years. It’s an opportunity for us as students to network and get our work out there to those who might have never seen it before,” said Hobbs.
Hobbs work will be featured — along with the work of other illustration seniors — in an upcoming exhibition at Sulfur Studious titled, “Sonder.”
Another artist was Sydney Veverka, shared her titled “Things to do on a Monday.” The works varied from climbing a mountain to startling an old man.
“By selling prints, showing portfolios, and even exposing our work to the younger students that are new to the illustration department,” noted Hobbs.
The Illustration Exposition brought in people from not only SCAD, but all around town and allowed illustrations majors to showcase their artwork and market to the greater area of Savannah.
“It’s always a really great experience to show your work to someone who has no idea what you do on a day to day basis,” said Hobbs.
