SCAD sports roundup: March 5
This past week in Bees sports included strong wins for the women’s lacrosse and equestrian teams, with the Lady Bees beating Emmanuel College 11-8 and equestrian placing as the overall Regional Champion team in the SCAD IHSA. Both the men and women’s golf teams lost their matches while the men’s lacrosse team was crushed by the Liberty University Flames.
Women’s golf:
The Lady Bees are in third place after round one in the Armstrong Atlantic Women’s Invitational golf tournament. Thirteen schools and 74 golfers are participating in the tournament. Alazne Urizar was the only golfer who shot under par on the 5,914 yard course. Urizar scored a two under 34 on the front nine and a one over 37 on the back nine of the par 72 course.
The Bees team of Urizar, Sofia Molinaro, Allie Agrella, Alexa Osbourn, and Becky Tetrick shot a combined first round score of 314 which is 10 shots behind the host, Armstrong Atlantic and one stroke behind second place Flagler College. The final round began today at 8:30 a.m.
Men’s golf:
The men’s golf team once again took on South Carolina University Beaufort in their second dual match of the season at the Oldfield Golf Club in Okatie, S.C. This time the USCB Sand Sharks came away with a win in the head to head by 21 strokes, 295-316, on the par 72 course.
Neale Barnes shot a team low 74 for the bees, while Julian Dinsing shot 76. They were followed by Taylor Sargeant (80), Rasa Lazarevic (86), and Dylan O’Leary (89).
The Bees will travel to Daytona Beach to participate in the ERAU Eagle Invitational on March 18 and 19.
Equestrian:
The equestrian team had a tough show, despite the home court advantage. The five days of rain flooded the rings at the Ronald C. Waranch Equestrian Center and the riders were only able to practice once the day before the event. The horses were not allowed to be turned out for normal periods because of the standing water and a severe shift in the temperature — a shift of 20 degrees on show day.
In spite of the undesirable weather conditions on the Saturday of the show, the SCAD IHSA began with the upper level divisions. Michael Kocher and Caroline Ingalls placed fourth and sixth in the open flat class. In open over fences, Ingalls was first and Kocher was third.
In the intermediate flat both Kelsey Jandura and Ryan Genn won their classes. Jandura was fourth in her intermediate fences class. Riders, Kelly Difiglia and Kristin Stine were both first in the novice flat classes. Hannah Friedman was first in her section of advanced walk/trot/canter and Tori Smolinski was fifth. In walk/trot Marianna Rodriguez was third and Kaitlin Petras was sixth.
The regional show was a better day as the sun came out and the horses had the opportunity to burn most of their pent up energy on Saturday.
Michael Kocher was Regional Champion in open equitation on the flat and Reserve Regional Champion over fences. Because of his performance, Kocher will be going on to the zone finals to try and win a spot to compete in the national championships. Kocher was the overall most winning rider in open flat and fences and will go directly to nationals to compete in the Cacchione Cup.
Caroline Ingalls was fourth in the flat and third over-fences. Her performance was just shy of qualifying for zones. Devon Walther was Regional Champion in intermediate on the flat and will advance, while Kelsey Jandura placed fourth in both intermediate flat and fences.
Madison Haradon was Regional Champion in novice on the flat and will go on to zones. Kristin Stine was third and Olivia Dodd finished fifth. Hannah Friedman was Regional Champion in walk/trot/canter and earned the privilege to ride at Zones on. Madison Myers finished fourth.
SCAD was the over-all Regional Champion team and will go on to compete against the four other Regional Champion teams in zone five on April 6, at Evermore Farm in Brooklet, Ga.
Women’s lacrosse:
Even with temperatures in the low 40s, there was no cooling off the Lady Bees. Over their five matches this season the team is outscoring their opponents 14-5 on average. In five games the ladies have scored 72 goals. Saturday was a continuation of their powerful offense and stingy defense.
On a very cold and windy afternoon, the Bees tried to heat up the day by jumping off to a 6-1 halftime lead against conference rival Emmanuel College. A balanced scoring attack of Charlotte Walters (4), Kayla Nelson (3), and Charlotte Cutts, Rainey Whitworth, Haley Fauvelle, Brittney Lukowski, and Alyssa Stetson adding one apiece, gave the Lions no one to focus on. It was a real team effort as Cutts served up six assists to her teammates as SCAD mounted an offensive thrust that never let up.
The ladies outshot the Lions of Emmanuel 29 to 16, and won the draw controlled game 11-8.
SCAD moves on to face Tennessee Wesleyan College, another conference opponent, at the SCAD Sports Complex. The match begins at 1 p.m. on March 8. Come out and support your reigning national champions as they try to keep their title in 2013.
Men’s lacrosse:
SCAD and Liberty University battled it out at the SCAD Sports Complex Friday afternoon. After a full day’s work, the statistics were pretty even. The bees took 40 shots to the Flames’ 39, with 21 ground balls to the Flames’ 22 and six assists to Liberty’s five. Liberty made better use of their shots, however, with only eight of the 40 attempted shots that SCAD attempted reaching the net. This was in large part due to Liberty’s strong goalie, Ethan Kamholtz, who saved 14 of 22 shots on goal.
The Bees had their opportunities, but never could get a lead in the game, outscored in every period — but not by many. The Flames outscored the Bees by two in the first, one in the second, two in the third, and one in the final period, adding up to a 14-8 victory.
The Bees spread their scoring around with Nate Travis scoring two and assisting on two others. Andrew Gualtieri had two goals and one assist, and Shelton Polka had two goals and one assist. Mike McQuaid chipped in one goal and had two assists, while Cody Sienkiewicz completed the balance scoring with one goal and a single assist.
After starting the season at 2-0, SCAD has now lost its last three matches, falling to 2-3. They hope to get things back together in the Sailfish Shootout, a three-day tournament in Palm Beach, Florida. The Bees will play Grand Valley State, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Sam Houston State on March 8 to the 10. Let’s go Bees!
