Last week, on Tuesday, September 24th, Donald Trump held a rally at the Savannah Civic Center in Johnny Mercer Theater.

In Trump’s roughly hour-and-a-half speech, the former president spoke on several topics. He spoke on his no-tax-on-tips proposal, his first assassination attempt, tariffs, and his plan to bring manufacturing back to the US. “We’re going to take other countries’ jobs. We will bring thousands and thousands of businesses and trillions of dollars in wealth back to the good ole’ USA.”

Georgia is a battleground state with one of the most pivotal and controversial outcomes in the 2020 election. President Biden won the state by only 12,000 votes at the time. Both candidates have had frequent visits to the state, as many election experts claim that Georgia is one of the three most important states in the upcoming election, others including North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Outside of the Civic Center, thousands of supporters waited in line and many did not gain entry to the rally. The venue, the Johnny Mercer Theater, holds roughly 2,500 people. After the doors closed, many supporters were left outside. Some went to venues to watch a live stream of the rally, while others stayed in line.

Additional security measures were apparent in the surrounding area following the two assassination attempts on Donald Trump’s life. Notably, snipers were posted on SCAD’s Oglethorpe House residence hall. A resource from NBC stated; all presidential candidates have received “Presidential-level protection from the U.S. Secret Service.”

Counter-protests were limited. Signs in support of presidential candidate Kamala Harris were placed on medians and on the route of Donald Trump’s motorcade. Some signs were taken down by Trump supporters. At the end of the rally, about twenty counter-protestors verbally clashed with departing and lingering Trump supporters.

SCAD has no official statement on the former president’s visit.
