Dear Birdie: Career Fair 101
Written by Birdie. Graphic by Ana Vergara Garcia.
Welcome back to “Dear Birdie,” a column where I do my best to offer guidance and some humor in response to questions from our college community! Throughout the column, I hope to help answer questions about anything and everything – from class troubles to relationship advice, movie recommendations and more.
In less than two weeks, on Feb. 21, SCAD will be hosting its first career fair in person since 2020. For those of us who’ve only experienced the career fair virtually, there are a lot of unknowns about how it works. Lucky for you, a little birdie told me to “go wild” with a Career Fair 2025 guide, where I’ll lay out all the information you need. So, let’s dive right in!
WHEN & WHERE:
- The Career Fair will take place on Friday, Feb. 21 at the Savannah Convention Center on the other side of the river. Yes, bus transportation will be available and no, you don’t have to pay for parking.
- It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., BUT there are specific entrance times based on class level.
- Alumni, graduate students, juniors, and seniors: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- First-year students and sophomores: 1–4 p.m.
PREP:
- Download the Career Fair Plus app and set up your profile. You can see what companies will be visiting (along with a map of the venue) and can drop your resume to the ones you’re interested in.
- Do your research! If you have set companies in mind, take the time to prepare and learn more about their mission, what draws you to them, what they support and what roles they’re currently hiring for.
- Print copies of your resume and business cards, and prepare a way to show your work.
- There are two more prep workshops before the big day, including a mock career fair and a SCADamp.
- CAS x SCADamp NET-WORK-SHOP: Savannah Thursday, Feb. 13, 5:30–8 p.m. at Deloitte Foundry, third-floor event space
- Mock Career Fair: Savannah Friday, Feb. 14, 1–4 p.m. at Deloitte Foundry, third-floor event space
DAY OF:
- Come dressed professionally and clean. You want to make a good impression!
- Bring those printed resumes, business cards, a notebook and a way to show your work! This can be either a digital portfolio or a printed one if applicable. Career and Alumni Success recommends not relying on wifi since it can be finicky and you don’t want any bumps in the road.
- Visit different booths and chat with employers! This is a networking event after all and you should be putting yourself out there, despite the nerves. Even if it doesn’t go the best it could, it all counts as practice.
- Catch up and relax with your peers. There’s going to be a “cool down” station to grab some water and get off your feet for a bit.
- After you’ve finished meeting with employers for the day, don’t forget to maintain the connection by finding them on LinkedIn!
Hopefully, this guide brings peace of mind to fellow birds about to leave the nest! For more information, check out the official SCAD Career Fair website here. Good luck!
That’s enough chirping from me for now.
Until next time,
Birdie
