A Cure for Spring’s Nostalgia

Spring has always been a time of reminiscing for me. My birthday falls in April, and every year I have more memories to wash over me. Oftentimes, the only cure for this wave of nostalgia is specific songs, or rather, a meticulously curated playlist.

My cure for the nostalgia that follows me every spring is “in motion,” a playlist that encapsulates my favorite memories. There are songs that remind me of my first time falling in love, seeing a shooting star, going to Europe, or learning guitar. Other songs hold intangible moments, ones I can almost feel again when my headphones blast out specific lyrics.

“In motion” reminds me that our lives are filled with change. I can let the moment pass over me, a cure for something inexpressible. I’ll never feel the same way I felt again, but I can remember it in these songs.

  1. “Lighthouse” by Adrienne Lenker

This is an allegorical and soulful tale of growing up, reminiscent of my first quarter in Savannah.

  1. “Lacewings” by The Clientele

I discovered this song during many sleepless nights in Connecticut. Whenever I hear it, I think about falling in love under a full moon.

  1. “Stars” by Hum

This is a grunge-y indie rock song I listened to when I travelled Europe with my friend. The late nights blurred into early morning and we played this song as we dove into the ocean at sunrise.

  1. “Get Away” by Yuck

I pulled this from a CD with cool art on the cover, in the stacks at my friend’s late-night radio show.

  1. “She’s A Jar” by Wilco

This is my favorite song to play on guitar; it’s bittersweet, eloquent, and dripping with gorgeous metaphors. It’ll always remind me of what I love about music.

Give “in-motion” a listen, and feel free to add songs that help cure your nostalgia.
