Tourists walking around Savannah this week for St. Patrick’s Day will probably visit Forsyth Park, stop at the fountain, note its green, festive water and take tons of pictures. But tourists may not want to stand too close to the fountain. There’s something in the water and it’s more than green dye. There are demons in the water.

The fountain features sculptures of several sea spirits. According to Hans Christian Andersen and other Scandinavian tales, some sea spirits are good-natured, whimsical beings. But others, as ancient mythology reveals, are not friendly at all, but very, very wicked.

And if these sea spirits are evil, tourists and Savannahians alike celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at the fountain, may need more than the luck of the Irish to fend off these mythological creatures.
