College Security Report: March 31-April 6, 2009
March 31
12:36 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Turner House. A SCAD student had informed the security officer on duty that she was taking her roommate to the Memorial University Medical Center emergency room with an ear infection. The student did not want EMS response. Dispatch called the resident director and informed her of the situation.
2:05 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that a black power cord and two eight-inch speakers were missing from Pepe Hall. She stated that she had last seen the items when she left them in Room 201 at 4:30 p.m. March 26.
7:50 p.m.— Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police arrived at Turner House with a search warrant. Security contacted the resident director who met the police at the scene. A detective and a police officer entered the room, took photographs and took possession of a Dell laptop computer.
April 1
12:04 a.m.— A resident assistant requested security assistance at a room in Dyson House with a suspected drug policy violation. The RA stated that while he and two other resident assistants were making rounds, they smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the room. Security responded to the scene and met with the RAs and resident director. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and spoke with the students. No arrests were made. The resident director stated that she would make sure that the issue was handled through student conduct.
12:45 a.m.— An unidentified student requested to be transferred to the on-call counselor. Security contacted the counselor and then transferred the call.
12:30 p.m.— The alarm company Sonitrol notified security of a fire alarm activation at the Alice Dorms. Security responded to the scene and met with Savannah Fire Department who were already on site. Savannah Fire Department determined that the alarm was false and reset the alarm.
12:30 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that her bike had been stolen from the bike rack at Crites Hall. She stated that she had last seen the bike when she locked it to the rack at 8:30 p.m. March 31. The bike was gone when she returned to Crites at 12:30 p.m. April 1. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
2:05 p.m.— A SCAD student reported to security that someone had stolen her wallet out of her pocket as she was walking off campus on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. She stated that the incident occurred between 1:55 p.m. and 2:05 p.m., and that the wallet contained her SCAD ID, debit card, credit cards, state ID and flash drive. No description of a suspect was available. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police responded to the scene and issued a report.
April 2
5:16 a.m.— The Sonitrol alarm company notified security of an intrusion alarm at Evans Hall. Security responded to the scene and discovered the second floor porch door to be open. An interior and exterior patrol of Evans Hall was completed. Nothing out of the ordinary was found and the door was secured.
11:06 a.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm activation with evacuation at the Gulfstream Center. Security discovered that the alarm was caused by a faulty tamper switch. Security allowed the students to return to class and an exterior patrol was conducted to make sure all exterior doors were secured.
11:40 a.m.— Dispatch was notified of a disruptive student at Eichberg Hall. A SCAD student was asked to move his vehicle from an illegal parking spot by a security officer and the building manager. He refused to move his vehicle and then called dispatch to complain about the security officer and the enforcement of the parking procedures. He would not listen to the security manager and was screaming and using profanity. The security manager responded to the scene, but the student had departed prior to his arrival.
1:30 p.m.— A SCAD professor notified security that he had been threatened by an unknown student in the Adler Hall parking lot. He stated that he had been waiting for an open spot in the parking lot when a student cut him off and took the spot for which he had been waiting. He asked the student why he took the spot when it was clear that someone had been waiting. The student replied, “Get out of my face.” He then asked the student if he was making a threat to which the student again replied, “Just get out of my face,” and then walked away.
2:20 p.m.— Security was notified that there was damage to an A/C unit at Barnard Village. Security responded to the scene and discovered that an A/C unit was on its side having either been struck by a vehicle or pushed over. Pictures were taken of the damaged unit and maintenance was notified.
2:28 p.m.— Security responded to an alarm activation at a room in Boundary Village. Security determined that the alarm was caused by a student cooking in the room. The alarm was silenced and reset.
8:32 p.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm with evacuation at Pulaski House. Security and the Savannah Fire Department responded to the scene and determined that the alarm was false. The students were allowed back into the building. A security officer was posted at the front entrance until repairs to the system could be made in the morning.
9:48 p.m.— Security responded to a trespassing call at Hamilton Hall. An unidentified male was reportedly harassing students at Adler Hall and Hamilton Hall. The individual followed a SCAD student into Hamilton Hall, stopped by the security officer, sat down in the lobby and refused to leave. Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police were notified and responded to the scene. The police escorted the man off site.
April 3
12:48 a.m.— A student told the security officer at Oglethorpe House that she had fallen on the stairs and cut her left hand on a bottle she was carrying. The student stated that her friend was taking her to the hospital and that she did not have time to give her information to the security officer. A resident assistant was notified of the situation. At 4:45 a.m. the student returned to Oglethorpe House and was identified.
1:24 a.m.— Sonitrol alarm company notified security that someone had attempted to arm the Hamilton Hall intrusion alarm with the wrong code. Security responded to the scene and conducted a patrol of the building. Nothing out of the ordinary was found.
9:40 a.m.— Security responded to a medical call at Eckburg Hall. A SCAD student was complaining of chest pains. EMS responded to the scene and evaluated the student. The student stated that she would have a friend drive her to the clinic after class.
12:07 p.m.— Security responded to a vehicle accident involving an American Coach Line Bus that had swiped a guardrail while entering the Boundary Hall parking lot. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. Security took pictures of the damage.
7:05 p.m.— A SCAD staff member reported to security that someone had damaged his vehicle while it was parked at York Hall. The damage consisted of scratches and dents to the rear passenger side panel. He stated that he did not want a police report.
10:19 p.m.— Security responded to a report of an intoxicated student causing a disturbance at Turner House. Security responded to the scene and spoke with student who stated that he was looking for his girlfriend that lives in Turner House. The student appeared to be intoxicated. A resident assistant and resident director were notified of the incident.
April 4
6 p.m.— A SCAD student accidentally hit the card reader at Boundary Village while entering the inbound gate. A work order was placed to repair the card reader.
8 p.m.— A resident director notified security that she had been informed that some SCAD students had marijuana in a room at Turner Annex. The security director was notified of the situation and responded to the scene. Upon investigation, the security director discovered a computer tower housing a grow kit, and several bottles of alcoholic beverages were found. The security director confiscated the tower grow kit, alcohol and other assorted paraphernalia. During the search, one of the residents arrived at the room. The resident stated that his roommate was the owner of the tower and that he knew that roommate used marijuana.
April 5
10:34 a.m.— Security received a call box activation at Old Arch. Security responded to the scene, but no one was in the area of the call box.
11:30 a.m.— Security discovered the side door to Lai Wa Hall was unsecured. A patrol of the building was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was discovered. A vehicle was on site, but no one appeared to be in the building. Security locked the door.
11:05 p.m.— Security responded to a fire alarm activation at Wallin Hall. Savannah Fire Department was already on site upon security’s arrival. Upon investigation the alarm was determined to be false and the system was silenced and reset by the Savannah Fire Department.
April 6
2:36 a.m.— Security responded to a call box activation at Eckburg Hall. Nobody was found in the vicinity of the call box.
5:42 a.m.— The Sonitrol alarm company notified security that the front door alarm at Trustees Theater had been activated. Security responded to the scene and found everything to be secure. A patrol of the area was conducted and nothing out of the ordinary was found. Security silenced and reset the alarm.
