Out of awareness that Lincoln Street’s northbound bike lane is often misused as a southbound lane, the Savannah Bicycling Campaign went to Mayor Otis Johnson last summer with the idea for a southbound bike lane on Price Street.
After months of field surveying, designing, and technical review, a final plan for the proposed Price Street bike lane has been outlined. If accepted, the proposed changes would create the first southbound bike lane out of the Historic District, add more than 80 on-street parking spaces, and act as a traffic-calming measure by eliminating one travel lane on Price Street.
To complete the proposal for its presentation to the Savannah City Council, the City of Savannah invites residents to attend a public open house to give feedback and answer questions. Any comments made by the community will then be forwarded with the proposal to the City Council. If approved by the end of September, the City of Savannah hopes the bike lane will be completed and open for use by the end of fall.
The public open house will be held Aug. 16 from 3 – 6 p.m. at the Savannah Arts Academy on Washington Avenue. For more information, call the Public Information Office at (912) 651-6410.
