News brief: City conducts local tour enforcement campaign

This weekend, the city of Savannah will be conducting a tour enforcement campaign to ensure the tour guide industry complies with city ordinances. Extra personnel from the city’s Citizen Office and Mobility and Parking Service will be on duty, concentrating efforts in high-tourism areas including Colonial Cemetery and Calhoun, Warren and Washington Squares.

Among the violations enforcement personnel will be looking for are:

– Undue noise or sound. Amplified sound cannot be plainly heard outside of the vehicle.
– Impeding traffic/stopping while narrating. The action poses a potential safety hazard.
– Encroachment onto private property. This includes staircases, porches and lawns.
– Too many in a tour. Tours cannot exceed 30 without an accompanied escort.
– Proper lighting and other safety equipment. Vehicles and carriages must have proper front and rear lighting.

The city will be working with tour leaders to ensure laws are followed to minimize impact on downtown residents and ensure a safe tour experience for visitors.
