The Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department has issued a warning of caution to women carrying purses, especially senior citizens.
On Nov. 6, two women were injured by a white male suspect with dark hair, in his mid-to-late 20s, and wearing a long-sleeve black jacket or shirt and tan shorts. He snatched their purses and ran.
Star Corporal Tracy Walden, a specialist in crime prevention, suggested the following preventative measures:
- Stay in well lighted areas.
- Carry a limited amount of cash with credit cars, identification and keys in a coat or sweater pocket.
- Carry smaller purses that can be easily protected.
- Avoid wrapping the purse strap around a shoulder, neck or wrist. Carry the purse like a football, tucked between the ribs and elbow.
- Have keys out when leaving a place en route to car.
- If you’re purse is grabbed, let it go. Nothing in it is worth your life.
- Call the police immediately with as many details as possible.
