President Barack Obama traveled to Virginia today to sign into law the bill that makes the government the primary lender for student loans. In this largest rewrite of college finance in four decades, more students will enjoy availability to loans and grants, and they will see a reduction in both interest rates and fees. The law, which goes into effect in 2014, will cap student loan repayments at no more than 10 percent of a graduate’s income.

A poll of California students reveals that the highest achieving students in the state increasingly distrust politicians to deliver on their promises and think California, overall, is headed in the wrong direction. The poll, conducted by EMC Research of 630 politically engaged students involved in youth leadership organizations, found that education funding and quality ranked among their highest concerns. Despite their lack of faith in government, however, the students remained civically engaged and espoused more collaborative approaches toward problem-solving that transcended political and ideological arguments.
