SCAD de:FINE ART is back for its 14th year starting February 28th through March 2nd with events ranging from artist gallery talks, an opening reception party and a film screening. These events will all be available to students and the public. Those interested can find information on the exhibiting artists, dates, times and locations on the de:FINE ART website. This year’s honoree is Jorge Pardo, a Cuban artist that produces work challenging the fine line between ordinary objects and fine arts such as the 70 blown glass lights that will be on display in the Pamela Elaine Poetter Gallery room at the SCAD Museum of Art.
All the artists coming are, “contemporary art’s most vital voices from all around the world,” says Daniel S. Palmer, the chief curator of the SCAD Museum. He goes on to explain how this allows students and other visitors to see the forefront works of this period and gain inspiration from the dynamic exhibitions. But more importantly, the featured artists are able to engage with students and connect in ways that normally wouldn’t happen. Artists have told him they, “see the next generation of students and learn from them as much as the students learn from the artists,” says Palmer. “I think it’s a really meaningful dialogue that all the artists are excited to be a part of.”
Kristin Poitras, the manager of museum visitation of programming, explains how de:FINE also lines up with SCAD’s winter academic quarter. Typically, it is during week seven, so students are past midterms but aren’t near finals. “It’s not an everyday opportunity for the students to get to meet these artists, and it’s just so much fun,” says Poitras. Be sure to check out the new exhibitions and meet the artists in a few weeks.
