Many things make SCAD’s Savannah campus special, but the city of Savannah itself is one of the best. A tourist destination for a reason, Savannah, Georgia is home to food, fun, and flora like no other. The campus thrives in historic buildings downtown, neighboring Spanish moss-filled squares and an endless supply of activities that one must indulge in to get the whole SCAD experience. While visiting for SCAD Day isn’t nearly enough time to experience Savannah top to bottom, here are a few student hubs to explore and enjoy the true SCAD Savannah student lifestyle.

Forsyth Park

Forsyth is the perfect place for a stroll, a morning run, a picnic with friends, a blanket-laid homework session, a public yoga class or a walk through the beloved Forsyth Farmers’ Market on Saturday mornings. Lots of students find themselves passing through Forsyth Park on their way to class or to meals, but many take a trip to the park just to hang out. There’s nothing better than lying in the sun or under some trees after a few hours in class.

Foxy Loxy

This quaint coffee shop is a place where lots of SCAD students hang out on weekdays and weekends alike. Foxy Loxy is many students’ second Savannah home after their dorm or apartment. It is “equal parts coffee shop, bakery, and Tex-Mex cantina” with a wide range of drinks and food. The courtyard in the back is a lovely, quiet place to relax or knock out some homework.

Avalon Exchange

Avalon Exchange is a great place to go for some retail therapy that doesn’t require a drive to the mall. While its home on Broughton Street tends to be tourist-heavy, SCAD students of all kinds love browsing Avalon Exchange for funky vintage and secondhand clothes. A lot of SCAD students also offload some styles they’ve grown out of by selling or trading their old clothes to Avalon Exchange.

Leopold’s Ice Cream

After a long day of class, homework, or doing nothing at all, the best way to wrap up a day at SCAD is a sweet treat at the famous Leopold’s Ice Cream. A SCAD and Savannah favorite, Leopold’s has all the classic flavors and some unique fan favorites like Savannah Socialite, a mixture of chocolate, pecans, and bourbon-infused caramel, and Rum Bisque, a rum ice cream with almond macaroons. Of course, ice cream isn’t for everyone, so their strawberry sorbet is an alternative that’s to die for.

Tybee Island

Lastly, a day trip out to Tybee Island is the way to go. The cute little beach town is about a thirty-minute scenic drive from downtown and a perfect way to escape the city lifestyle every once in a while. With restaurants, beach vibes of all kinds and SCAD’s Sand Arts Festival every spring quarter, Tybee Island is the perfect little getaway when class lets out on Thursdays.
