On March 10, “All Shook Up” opened at Lucas Theater for the Arts. The show ran through Sunday, March 13, bringing in audiences of all ages to enjoy a story full of comedy and love. Presented by the SCAD School of Entertainment Arts, the show was run completely by SCAD students and faculty. This was the first large-scale show to open at Lucas Theater since “Little Women” was presented in 2020. “All Shook Up” did not disappoint, using a fantastical set, vibrant lighting, powerful singing and a script that had the entire audience cackling.
Set in a sleepy Midwestern town in the 1950s, this musical features some of America’s most memorable songs from Elvis Presley such as “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog” and “Heartbreak Hotel.” The story revolves around a cast of characters who want nothing more than to find love despite the town mayor’s strict rules on public affection. With the arrival of a guitar-playing bad boy, the town becomes excited by his exuberant singing and dancing. The local mechanic falls head-over-heels for the newcomer, causing her to change herself to impress him. This light-hearted, endearing story pleased audiences of all ages.
The last show presented by the SCAD School of Entertainment Arts happened in 2020, just before the pandemic forced SCAD classes to resume online. Since then, the School of Entertainment Arts has not been able to put on a large-scale show due to COVID-19 safety issues. Many students, especially those in the School of Entertainment Arts, missed the yearly Lucas Theater show. Because classes have been conducted on-ground once again, students and faculty were pleased to hear that a show would be presented this year. “All Shook Up” was the perfect show to present to an audience who missed the joys of live theater, making it a great success for the students and faculty who worked hard to put on a fantastic show.
