Alumni Spotlight: Myles Broomfield

Myles Broomfield originally came to SCAD to study film and television. However, after attending a meeting hosted by SCAD’s Ad Club for the advertising copywriting minor, he was hooked, switched majors and never looked back.

That switch ultimately worked in Broomfield’s favor. He now lives in Orlando, Florida and works as a copywriting intern for Disney’s Yellow Shoes Creative Group.

Broomfield, a native of Houma, Louisiana, graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts in visual communication with a concentration in advertising. Initially, Broomfield did not know much about the advertising industry. What he did know was how to tell stories which he carried over from his time in the film and television department.

“Once I got into my copywriting classes, it clicked with me that that’s what I needed all along, the ability to write stories and write them concisely a million different ways which I learned how to do within my advertising classes,” Broomfield said. “And I don’t remember where I heard it, but as I was going into my ‘super’ senior year, one of the most important lessons that I learned was, ‘just because you took longer than others, doesn’t mean you failed.’ Another great lesson I learned in my self-promotion class is to ‘always let your work speak for itself.’”

It was through SCAD that Broomfield learned about Yellow Shoes, where he applies what he learned in and out of the classroom. Shortly after graduation, Broomfield said he participated in the Disney College Program where he worked at Epcot and learned everything he could about the company before applying to Yellow Shoes.

“Aside from having a solid portfolio of work, I think doing the College Program and having that on my resume was a great bonus to me as an applicant for the internship,” Broomfield said. “It’s still so surreal each day I come into work. Like, I’m at my dream company? Doing my dream internship? Somebody pinch me.”

Through SCAD, Broomfield said he met great friends, some of whom he collaborated with on projects. He said he still networks with fellow SCAD alumni both through LinkedIn and Yellow Shoes. Broomfield said he especially enjoys connecting with the alumni at Disney and hearing about their journey to the company.

“The people you meet at SCAD and the resources they provide are unparalleled,” Broomfield said. “It took me a few months after graduation to fully realize how good I actually had it there.”

Beyond Yellow Shoes, Broomfield said he has his sights set on the West Coast.

“I don’t want to jinx it, but I’m looking at Los Angeles as my next step forward and working with some of the entertainment agencies out there,” Broomfield said.

Broomfield said he wants those currently studying or thinking about a career in advertising to not be afraid pursuing the “big” internships and jobs.

“You have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain,” Broomfield said. “Also, start networking right now – the sooner recruiters know who you are the better- and use all of the resources that SCAD provides!”
