Animal Control answers to new number

BY ANGELA WILSON

The City of Savannah now has a new number to make it easier for students and residents to help the animal in distress, whether it is a stray cat or dog, or one that is tethered, injured or a victim of cruelty.

Beginning June 1, the Savannah-Chatham Metro Police (SCMPD) Animal Control will now be answering to the phone number 311.

This number was originally reserved for the City of Savannah’s non-emergency calls for its residents to report non-emergency incidents, such as a pot holes or a downed tree. Only one dispatcher answered this number from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

This emergency line, though, has been redirected toward Animal Control and will be open 24 hours, seven days a week.  There also will be multiple dispatchers to assist furry friends at a faster pace.

The City of Savannah made this change to streamline response time, to better help protect the animals that live amongst us, and to improve customer satisfaction. The 311 system is not abandoning its general obligations and can still be contacted for non-emergency issues by the students and residents of Savannah.

For citizens that live in an unincorporated area, they will continue to call (912) 651-6675. The call will be redirected to the 311 line.
