Artists and Athletes: SCAD Fall 2024 Athletics Recap

Writing by Trinity Ray, Photos by Ally Abruscato

While SCAD artists kick off their fall quarter in a spiral of creativity our SCAD athletes add that special flair of competition to the rotation. August and September held events for a total of nine Savannah campus athletic teams. Here are the highlights for those who may have missed a match, because we all know how studio critiques are mandatory.

No. 14 Women’s Soccer:

Currently dominating the scoreboards, we are looking at a total of eight wins, one tie, and one loss for our WSOC team. Keeping in mind that Ted Lasso is where my soccer knowledge caps off, those stats sound pretty great to me. These women have a current winning streak of five, and I have faith that number may keep increasing. Cheer on our SCAD Bees at their next game (home) against Southeastern University Fire on October 9th!

Men’s Soccer:

Staying within the same sport for this one, SCAD men’s soccer is currently standing with a total of five wins, three ties, and two losses. During their most recent game, our MSOC team started off in the lead after scoring the first point. They took this lead and brought a winning home, three to one, against Warner. Stay tuned to see how these athletes continue their current winning streak of two in their next match (away) against Southeastern University Fire on October 10th!

No. 13 Women’s Cross Country and Men’s Cross Country:

So far, our XC athletes – men and women teams – have competed in two meets this fall. At the end of August, SCAD started off the season at the Buccaneer Open in Charleston, SC. While our MXC ranked third out of the nine teams that competed, WXC ranked third out of six teams that competed. Talk about consistency!

More recently, in September, our bees went to Queen City Invite in Charlotte, NC. Overall, WXC finished third out of twelve total teams with a total of 64 points; MXC finished sixth out of twelve teams with a total score of 175 points. Let’s wish our athletes good luck at their next match, the Louisville Cross Country Classic on October 5th!

No. 8 Women’s Tennis:

Our SCAD Bees had an exciting start to their season at the ITA Regional Championship in Florida. While I cannot go through each individual players scores right now, I can give you the highlights! Two student athletes, Yue Yu and Adeline Flanagan made it to the quarterfinals. Also advancing to the quarterfinals was the doubles team, Francina Puig Llompart and Adeline Flanagan.

No. 17 Men’s Tennis:

SCAD men’s tennis also competed at the ITA Regional Championship, bringing home a win! David Lopez Cruz and Danil Ozernoy defeat Southeastern’s Fernandez and Menendez Vina and bring home the ITA Regional Doubles Championship. Congratulations on making history! As far as singles go, Mark Tryakshin and Adam Jaupart advanced to the quarterfinals, and Danil Ozernoy made it to the finals.

Men’s Golf:

These athletes may be off to a bumpy start with their most recent competition, Invite at Innisbrook, ending in a placement of 19th out of 20 with a total team score of +73. Continuing to look ahead these SCAD Bees are now preparing for their next competition – St. Andrew’s Fall Classic in Wagram, NC.

Cycling:

At the beginning of September, these SCAD athletes found themselves in Breinigsville, PA, at the USA Cycling Track National Championship. We had three students finish in the top ten in their respective events. For the Women’s 3k Pursuit, Jette Aelken placed sixth. With an eighth-place finish in the Men’s Points Race is Eugenio Mirafuentes. Then, Emiliano Mirafuentes finishes ninth in the Men’s Scratch Race. At the same championship, SCAD Cycling also earned ninth place in the Co-Ed Italian Team Pursuit. As well as ninth place in the Team Omnium.

Now, when we discuss mountain bikes SCAD CYCL competed at Lees-McRae in Banner Elk, NC. Here we had two amazing athletes finish in the top three in their respective races. Justin Frambes achieving first place in the Men’s C cross country race. Jette Aelken finishing third in the Women’s A cross country race. A big congratulations to our SCAD Cycling students!
