Artists collaborate on flash art booklet

Furniture design major Aaron Unser came up with the idea of a collaborative art booklet during his first year at SCAD. Now in his third year, Unser teamed up with a range of local artists to produce “Indecent Exposure:” an art booklet that is composed of tattoo-style flash sheets. The witty title plays on the double-meaning of the term “flash.”

“I’ve always wanted to do a localized collaborative art book or series,” said Unser, who made a call for submissions during the fall and then added all interested parties to a Facebook group page.

“I kind of winged it and put it together. It’s come together better than I expected.” Unser said in regards to the overall process.

Out of approximately 40 people who joined the Facebook group and showed interest in the project, 24 artists submitted their work. Unser left the medium up to the artist just as long as it followed flash style layout. The featured artists include SCAD students Tom Perkins, Rachael Boswell and Aoife Estes.

The 30-page booklet includes a variety of mediums including collage, knit work and concept art. “It’s super diverse. A lot of them are friends and friends of my friends,” said Unser on the range of art and artists.

“I’d be selling them, but that profit would go entirely to volume two or to the artists that contributed,” said Unser, explaining the release of the art booklets.

“Ideally, I want to have a release show. Get some bands on board. A couple of my co-workers play in bands,” he added. Unser plans to hold a release show for the art book sometime February. In terms of future plans for “Indecent Exposure,” he hopes to release a second volume sometime in the near future.

“It would be cool if we could keep doing flash but I feel like that concept would run dry really quickly. But it was suggested to me to do a writing version or a mixed media version, which I think would be cool.”

Having just finished putting together the booklet, Unser has high hopes for the future of the the series but wants to see how well the first volume does first.

“We’ll see after the reception or the release. If it turns out well, I’m definitely going to keep going.”
