Audio File: Sending Out an ‘SOS’ Because This Deluxe Took Me Out

When SZA released her album “SOS” in 2022, she gave us heartbreak, rage and self-sabotage with glittering production and blunt lyricism. Now, with “SOS Deluxe: LANA,” she extends the world of “SOS.” And not necessarily with answers, but with even sharper questions. If “SOS” was about drowning, “LANA” is the moment you realize you’re treading water and decide to float anyway.
Standout track “Saturn” is the emotional reset of the deluxe. The vocals feel softer, like a sunrise after months of storms. “If there’s another universe / Please make some noise,” she pleads. Suddenly it’s less about romantic chaos and more about existential fatigue. There’s a new calmness here — not peace exactly, but resignation that still wants to believe in something better.
There’s a subtle evolution in production too, with less made for TikTok snappiness and more space to breathe. The deluxe tracks lean moodier, more textured, often built on live instrumentation or stripped-back melodies. It’s almost like she’s rejecting the idea that every song needs to be instantly viral. She’s chasing timelessness instead.
Fans of her earlier Kendrick Lamar collaborations will spot this familiar thread — both artists excel at turning self-analysis into sonic therapy. SZA’s storytelling on LANA feels more aligned than ever with Kendrick’s world of messiness, contradictions and honesty. It’s no surprise that her live shows, especially during the “GNX” tour, have become these cathartic, genre-blurring experiences. If you’ve seen her perform “F2F” in a punk-rock fit or cry-sing “Special” from a sinking lifeboat, you know: SZA isn’t just curating your everyday music, she’s building a universe where heartbreak and healing can sit in the same breath.
Is LANA perfect? No — the pacing drags in places, and a few tracks feel more like demos than finished pieces. But maybe that’s the point. This deluxe isn’t about polish; it’s about process. And if SOS was the scream, LANA is the exhale.
