This evening, on March 2, SCAD’s chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) will host its annual Beaux Arts Ball.
The ball has been a traditional event since its conception in 1648 Paris, France. The event, eventually brought to America in 1911, celebrated the end of exams for students of the L’Ecole National Superieure Des Beaux Arts also known as the National Academy of Architecture, Painting and Sculpture.
“Traditionally, most architecture schools host a Beaux Arts Ball, usually organized by their AIAS club chapters,” said third-year architecture major RJ Scalzo.
In the past, SCAD’s Beaux Arts Ball ball has featured creative themes such as Casino Royale and the Roaring Twenties; last year, the AIAS collaborated with animators and motion media artist to create a futuristic vibe. The theme of this year’s event is “Deception.”
This year SCAD’s Architecture Department will be collaborating with the Interior Design Organization (IDO) to give the ball an extra flare. The event has a reputation for being extravagant, and the SCAD AIAS chapter plans to live up to that.
Partygoers can expect a projection mapped display by motion media student Robyn Whaples, draped fabric installation, catering by Spudnik, a performance by the Vicious Committee and SCAD Radio’s Devin Brown to DJ the event.
The 2018 Beaux Arts Ball is from 7 – 11 p.m. in the Ships of The Sea Maritime Museum’s north garden. General admission is $25 ahead of time, purchased on Eventbrite, and $30 at the door. All proceeds go to SCAD’s AIAS chapter, Freedom by Design and IDO.
Anyone who intends to attend is encouraged to dress accordingly and mingle amongst the faculty and other peers.
