Black Student Association hosts night of poetry and music

By Tiffany Cullen

October 16, the Black Student Association held its second annual open mic night of music and poetry at the Gryphon Tea Room.

In the standing room only event, students lined up to try their hand at reciting and reading their favorite poems or just opening up the floor for a session of discussion. Some students performed stand up will others sang.

Master of ceremonies Rachel Griffin introduced each act and lightened up the crowd with a little on the spot comedy.

The featured act, Purely Acoustik, performed smooth numbers to a cheering crowd. Jimmy Fisher provided the sound and George Lovett the vocals.

The group formed in 2007 and has performed together ever since. They performed their original songs “Happy” and “Every Time I Think of You,” to an exhilarated crowd.

Sheldon French also entertained the crowd with poetry and what could only be described as a slow jam R&B song that had the crowd whistling.

Low lights provided a warm glow and community atmosphere. Spoken word poetry consumed most of the night as students read original works, some created just for the event. The crowd, a rainbow of cultures, supported the students in their vocal adventures.

BSA President Tamara Hayes took the reins of the club this past spring quarter and is leading the club into a bright future of exciting events and service opportunities.

The club not only caters to African Americans, but to every other culture as well. Collaboration and making a difference are the main goals of the BSA.

Right now, the BSA is looking for students to come up with ideas for volunteer opportunities. If you would like to join or learn more about the BSA, check out the club’s
