SCAD graduate Emily Larrabee, B.F.A. illustration, 2018, spoke with us about her art in our most recent episode of “Bookmarked and Dogeared.” Larrabee said she started out in animation when she first arrived at SCAD but quickly found that her passion was in character design and book illustration. Her most notable projects include illustrating the book “A Million Pennies Worth” by Amanda Doster and creating the book cover for “Sydney Shag and the Sirens” by Cyndi Gryte.
Larrabee said she draws inspiration from the work of Disney artist Mary Blair and the film “Frozen.” Larrabee said that she naturally gravitated towards a kid-friendly art style. “I like playing with a lot of shapes and patterns. I look at a lot of 50s and 60s animation for the color,” Larrabee said.
In this episode, Larrabee discusses the development of her art style, her goals for herself as an artist and how she found that illustration was her passion. “In illustration, you have to get the entire story across in a single image, and it has to be from the colors you choose, from the composition and you have to get all of that in a still,” Larrabee said.
Check back Sunday, May 23 for the 12th episode of “Bookmarked and Dogeared.”
