On Friday, Feb. 22, SCAD’s Black Student Association (BSA) collaborated with Savannah State College to host their 4th annual “Lights, Camera, Excellence” event in celebration of Black History Month. The theme of this year’s show was “This is America,” which referenced the musician Childish Gambino and his song of the same title released last May. The music video for the song caused a stir after its release due to the racial symbolism, gun violence and political hints throughout. The video and song won four record breaking awards at the 2019 Grammy’s, including song and video of the year, making it the first rap song to win this title in Grammy history. BSA touched on many of the same ideas and brought personal experiences to life through a variety of talent. From singing to dancing to spoken word, performers expressed the hardships that African-Americans faced in history and still face today.
