Campus Carriers is a summer storage and moving option for students. The premise of the company is that they provide door-to-door service with summer storage. SCAD has recently partnered with this company because it offers services that may be helpful to students; they come on campus, drop off the supplies that the student has ordered, and return at a scheduled time to pick it up the boxes, store them for the summer and then bring them back before fall quarter to their residence hall or off-campus apartment.

According to the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life and Housing, Jason Rigsbee, “The company was started by students from Virginia Tech who saw that students who were moving out each year needed a more convenient option.”

SCAD chose to partner with Campus Carriers after doing research for several years over what would be a convenient option for students. “There was not truly another company in the community that offered a similar service to this, where everything gets brought on to campus. For us, it was just another option for students,” said Rigsbee.

He went on to say that “summer storage is a common question that we get from both parents and students alike as SCAD does not offer on-campus storage. We are always looking for ways to assist students, reduce the time and anxiety that this endeavor takes.  With finals and moving out, and needing to be out by a specific time, this seemed to be a very convenient option.”

As it is the first year that SCAD is partnering with Campus Carriers, it is difficult to say that there will be a specific target audience.

“There are, however, certain people within the SCAD community who will benefit from this service”said Rigsbee. “Many international students might find it to be a very helpful service because they often have scheduling conflicts with flights and they often don’t have vehicles. This gives them an option to store their belongings.”

“There is no way that I can bring all of my items back to Japan over the summer break,” said Manami Goto a first-year interior design student from Tokyo, Japan.  “There is a limit to the number of suitcases, and shipping costs a lot. Having to package everything during finals is a lot of energy, and thinking about how to transport the packages to and from storage is too tiring. Since I got to know about this storage, I would consider it for this summer.”

For many people, the convenience of not having to worry about moving during finals is where this service should be of great value.

If a student is interested in the services that Campus Carriers provide, he or she can go on to the company’s website to choose or customize a package that is most fitting to their needs. There is also a live chat option that can further help students along the process.

According to Rigsbee, “Campus Carriers is convenient, simple and timely. It’s not better or worse than other services students can choose, but it is truly convenient.”
