Savannah, Georgia is home to some of the country’s richest and most well-preserved Black history, and seeing as today is the start of Black History Month, there’s no better city to celebrate in. Concerts, historical tours, art-filled fun and more are available to the public throughout this entire month with plenty of ways to learn, observe and pay tribute to the achievements and battles African American people have endured throughout U.S. History. Below I’ve highlighted a couple of the events I’m particularly excited to attend, and I hope to see you there!

February 1 – Starting off the month strong, Painting with a Twist is doing a Celebration of Black History Month painting from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at its Savannah location. Tickets to participate start at $40, and if you can’t make it to this one, they’ll be hosting a repeat event at their Pooler location on February 22nd.

February 1-25 – Throughout the majority of the month, Savannah will be celebrating with its 35th annual Black Heritage Festival. The festival, presented by Savannah State University, is filled with a diverse lineup of events including performances, educational sessions, art exhibitions and more. On the morning of February 10th, the Susie King Taylor Center for Jubilee is hosting the dedication of the recently re-named “Taylor Square,” and on February 24th, the Savannah African Art Museum is hosting a workshop devoted to root-tracing at the Bull Street Library. For a full schedule of the Black History Festival and all other events, I’ve included a detailed Google Calendar link at the bottom of this article.

February 3 – Also in association with the Black Heritage Festival, the City of Savannah is hosting its second annual Black Art Expo from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center. Performers, vendors, food trucks and more will be gathered for the cultural celebration featuring local Black artists and organizations.

February 16 – After selling out for the last two years, SCAD is hosting its 3rd annual BAM! Musical celebration at Lucas Theatre featuring major award-winning musical artists, the SCAD Bee Sharps and more! This highly-anticipated event costs $35 for the public and $20 for SCAD Cardholders and is sure to be a night to remember.

From artistic endeavors to educational tours, Black History Month in Savannah is sure to have something for everyone, and the events I’ve highlighted are only the tip of the iceberg. For the full detailed calendar of what’s in store, click here!
